How common is it to run into bears on the trail?

It depends on where you are. If in the Smokies or in the SNP you will see alot of bears. Did the AT in the SNP last week and saw 8 bears in 10 days

+1 I've hiked from Springer to the NJ state line and have seen 17 bears. 13 of those were in the two parks mentioned above.

There are lots of photo opportunities for bears on the trail, its just getting them to pose for the camera

(its a joke) - the person hiking in front of you will most likly chase them away - so unless you hike early and late - you wont see many.

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

I saw 4 or so bears on each of my thruhikes. They were in Virginia, New York, New Hampshire and Maine. Some see more, some see none. Seems like they are much more common these days.

Didn't say if you wanted to see bear or avoid them.

If you expect to see them or about any wildlife avoid hiking with others that won't shut up. Spread yourself out away from chatty hikers and cell phone addicts.
Then again if you want to avoid bears hang with the talking crowd.

The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.

We saw 14 in SNP last summer.... They always ran from us, acting more like the deer around here!

In the past, I hiked GSMNP about twice a year for decades and ever only saw a handful of bears. I've gone on 5 trips this year, and every one of them, I've seen a bear. In most cases, as soon as the bear has detected my presence, he immediately heading into deep woods off the trail... sometimes slowly, sometimes quickly. Most recently was at an AT shelter eating lunch and a bear came nosing around. It knew I was there, but I remained quiet as I stood there taking some pictures. When he got within 30-25ft of where I was eating, I called it quits, hollared once, and the bear ran off.

I've hiked GSMHP about twice a year for years and only caught fleeting glances of bears in the past.
