Default 2000 mile hike that has never been done before??

I've been reading a blog that I picked up on here a few years ago, http://www.kenilgunas.com/, and today he has posted about his preparations for a 2000 mile multi country North American hike that no one has ever done before and may not ever again. He also mentions that he is unsure about the legality of it, so he does not say where it is. Does anyone have an idea what kind of hike this guy is going on?

It sounds like he is planning a Bering - Siberian hike. It's likely illegal, dangerous, and been done before.

Its a challenge for sure, not fun tho

That's not likely as he is using mail drops for all his food and they all go in priority mail boxes. My guess is the hike spands US and Canada.

    Trans Canada Trail?

Or Something around the Superior Trail?

Just Conjecture. Not necessarily illegal with a passport or birth certificate.

Possibly following the border, probably the northern border. There is a wide cut swath between the US and Canada that is rather tempting for a hiker. It probably would be illegal to hike along it. Lakes and rivers could be a problem too.

The Bering - Siberian crossing has been done. Look up Karl Bushby. He walked from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska, crossed the Bering Strait, then continued into Siberia. As of last April, his journey was halted because of visa issues.

Well, it's about 2,000 miles give or take a few from Vancouver to Thunder Bay so I'd take a guess that he thinks he's going to hike along the international border.

The legality of it (or the illegality) would depend on whether he stays on one side of the 'white line on the map' or whether he wanders back and forth. Wandering back and forth without clearing customs would definitely put him in the questionable position.

It would appear from his food drops being done by US Mail that he intends to pick them up in the US and he'd be foolish to try to ship them internationally, given the time delays, customs paperwork and all the rules and regulations ad nauseum.

My maps don't show a whole lot of roads that go in the right direction and it's a whole whack of bushwhacking until you hit the prairies and there's definitely not a trail nor a series of ones that could be connected!

Wish him luck but I think it's a bit of a pipedream!!

I know of this swath of cut line along the border and have actually seen it and walked on it. Tell me why it would be illegal to do it?

As The Old Boot says, if he travels from one country to the other, without clearing customs, he could get in trouble. Given all the lakes and rivers, crossing the border could be a necessity to get around or across them. I imagine the border patrol folks might take issue with following the border, though I don't know whether it's actually illegal to hike the cut zone for any distance. It would be like hiking between the US and Mexican fences - no man's land. You might not get arrested, but you might be escorted elsewhere and you certainly would be questioned.
