    Default Maps on iPhone

    Hey all,

I've grown accustomed to having the AT on google maps. Does anyone know if the Apple maps in ios6 has the AT on it?

No the Apple maps does not but Google has provided their maps as a stand alone app to Apple. Just waiting on Apple to approve it before it will be offered on the App Store.

I look forward to the day when smart phones can truly double as GPS units. I've been very frustrated with my old Garmin Colorado 400 -- it's not easy to use, it takes forever to boot up, and using a long distance route on it is overly complicated (pre-create segments and load then each time you want to view them). Maybe I just needed to have purchased a simpler model/product but, ugh, I've used it here in Montana and while hiking the Te Araroa in New Zealand. Not ideal.

And Google Maps is just amazing.

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

There is a AT iPHONE app that is pretty useful called AT Trails.

You might want to have a look at this: http://topomapsapp.com/
Getting the maps loaded is a little clunky, but it works. Also loads GPX data.

ATTrails or just search 'Appalachian Trail' which is how I found it. It will come up as ATTrails ## where ## is 1- 16?

I also have the topomap app mentioned above and it's good and useful but a bit dated - not the app but the data.

I got the ATTrail 2 app. I plan on trying it out next weekend when I do a section hike around Hot Springs. I do imagine though that this will be a huge battery drain.

Please report back your findings. I have used ATTrails 11 and 12, no battery issue at all as it only uses location information when you tell it too - which it does then when it find's itself shuts location info off again. I also suggest turning off wifi (and bluetooth) while hiking as a general power savings method if you still want location services and cellular service. Closing all apps manually before the hike also can help.

If you are using an iPhone you can turn off the phone to save battery. With the phone active it searches for a signal and consumes a lot of battery in doing so. This is not he same as airplane mode which turns off both the phone and GPS. To disable the phone you have to lock the SIM. It then becomes a dedicate GPS. My battery lasts about 4 days doing this.

I'm so confused, I'm not sure if I lost my horse or found a rope.

ATT iPhone 4 (and other SIM based iPhones). To absolutely maximize battery life, deactivate the phone’s SIM by using one of two methods:
Remove the SIM card from your phone. Be careful, the SIM card is small and quite easy to lose. This method should work for any iPhone with a SIM card, not just ATT phones in the U.S.
Or, use the SIM PIN feature (read Apple's Help Topic. and call 611 from your phone to get your initial PIN from ATT). When using this feature, you are asked for the PIN code only after the phone is fully powered down, not after each time the phone has been asleep

I tried the ATTrail 2 app out this past weekend. It worked pretty good and was very accurate at giving my location. It works even with out cell coverage. Its neat to use when you haven't passed a landmark in a while and don't know how far you are between two points.

It's a bit expensive? $1.99 for each one (16 total I believe). Also, they definitely should have all of these wrapped up into one app. I could imagine it would be a bit annoying to have 16 different apps all for the same purpose.
