    Default backpack question

When I look at these outfitters and I'm referring to the American cottage companies such as gossamer gear and what not they all have the base weight and max loads set to a certain number. Say then that the recommended base weight for a gossamer gear g5 is 12 lbs Does this mean that I should have 12 lbs or less of permanent base weight gear AND THEN the pack or should te pack weight BE PART OF THE initial base weight do that I need to have a base weight of les than 12 including the weight of the pack?

Base weight generally means everything but consumeables . . . so that includes the pack.

My interpretation is that the base weight suggestions include the pack. So 12 pounds is the pack, all your gear, clothing, etc. - everything except food, water, and fuel.

^^ To my understanding, this is correct.
