We're already getting the rain bands on the Space Coast. It's been raining since 4 this morning. If you look at NOAA sat. it's a big system. If it hits a cold front up north it could get nasty real quick. Hikers need to watch out.

I think everyone on the trail will be very aware of the storm... pretty hard not too be when its all EVERYONE is talking about on the east coast. Can't escape it.

It's definitely not stopping me from going out Saturday though!

This system has the potential of erasing our yearly rain deficit in a matter of a few hours. Of course with heavy wind the sideways rain may never actually soak the ground.

Eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, western Virginia and the Shenandoah Mountains could get snow.

Now even the Associated Press thinks there's a place called the Shenandoah Mountains. I guess it could be worse they could have called them "The Shenies"

I'd love all my weather forecasts to be in Hikerese - "Almost no chance of seeing rain today, should be a large concentration of day hikers, bringing us up to a higher than average 85% chance of yogi in the greater Shenendoah walking area."

Thanks to all for the storm info btw! Was a bit concerned about going out this weekend, but looks like we'll be able to get home before any real nastiness arrives. Early next week, however, looks to be different - everyone please stay safe!

Cancelled Vermont section hike for next week. Not interested in getting that wet or walking up hill against the tide.

Had a tough day on the bike today, thanks to headwinds from Sandy. Being close to the ocean it's normally windy here, averaging between 10-20mph everyday, but today it felt like at least 30 mph, thankfully Sandy isn't closer to the coast. On the plus side I had a 3-mile section with a tail wind and was able to do that section at 30mph, but then took another turn...I'm freakin' whipped...

What was the last hurricane to hit Orlando? Donna? Maybe Wilma?
In 04, we had three hit Otown. Charlie came across downtown as a cat 1 and was very tightly formed. Jean was a large system that hung over us for several days and dumped incredible rains which downed tons of trees because of the added water weight, and I do think Wilma was the third. Also a very large system.

Winds of 75 - 120 are forecast. You're going to get more than wet.

The latest has Sandy sitting over Pennsylvania and New York for a day. This is a huge storm and will dump massive amounts of rain during that time while it barely moves. Add in the full moon/high tides when it comes ashore, and the major problems are going to be flooding, downed trees and loss of electrical power. If it goes as predicted, there may be millions of people without power for days, even weeks.

And 90% of them will be whining that they never thought it would happen, and that they are out of food and water and whu can't the government do something.

The brunt of the storm is expected to miss RI, but we are still expecting high winds and torrential rains. In the interest of public safety, (to reduce the possibility of flying debris ), a local congressional candidate has asked all his supporters to remove his campaign signs from their lawns and store them until the storm has passed by. Be interesting to see if other candidates follow suit on this advice.

Further west in the Appalachian Mountains, all the rain will turn to snow – a lot of snow for this early in the season.
