3.5 days would be good for planning I think if you are carrying under 30lbs with food and water

You are not going to do it in 2 without torturing yourself and hiking 12 hrs per day.

On my thru attempt this year, I did Approach to Neel's in two days, but it was hell and I was in shape, very used to hiking ups-and-downs (thank you New England...) and carrying a light load (base weight was around 13lbs). I would NOT recommend doing this, though. Treat it more as a 4 day distance. The Approach Trail really kicks asses, don't underestimate it. Heck, even Springer to Neel's in two days is rough.

Definitely good advice here. I did a section hike last year, went from Springer to Hawk and decided "hey, it's early in the day, I'll continue on to the next water source." Ended up camping on top of Sassafras Mountain, which does not have a water source. It was a crappy night and a thirsty hike on to Justus Creek in the morning.
