    Default Cimmaron

I have heard that Cimmaron, a 90 y.o. hiker, is back on the trail. Has anyone run into him.

I met him last year between Little Laurel and Jerry Cabin shelter. He was ambling along happy as a clam.

    I hope I can do that when I'm 90...

I'm a bit surprised if he's trying another thru.
His trailjournal last year showed it was very hard on him, so I hope he's recovered.
I would have thought he would have another journal as well if he was hiking.
Good luck to him if he is or even if he's just sectioning.

I hope i can do it this year at 57. My Grandma stayed active weeding her garden right up to about two weeks before she passed at 100 yrs 8 months.
I start out the Day with nothing and by the end of the Day I still have most of it.

He was supposed to start yesterday but I don't have a way to verify that he did. Please don't run into him, just pass him and say hi

I met him on his 2011 thru attempt. Had one of the funniest lines ever when talking about how his wife inspired him when she said "You'll never make it."

Sounds like he's going to be about a week ahead of me. I hope to meet up with this nonagenarian.

Met him and his buddy Bearbag in 2008 when he was on his 2nd thru-hike attempt. We all were at the Hiker Hostel and we all set off together from Springer. He could just toss himself down on the hard floor of a shelter on nothing more than a piece of Tyvek - no mats. I just couldn't believe that. If I tried that I'd be completely paralyzed from the pain the next morning.

My year was wrong in my earlier post - - we met Cimarron and Bearbag in March 2007, not 2008.

Cimarron 2013 Trail Journals Site: He arrived at HikerHostel.com on Saturday, hiked Sunday from Springer, and is back at HikerHostel today at noon. Here is the link to his latest journal. He says, "This is a low key hike to get the old age one year Thru-hike record!" He is 90 and will be 91 when he finishes. http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?trailname=14726

When Cimarron stayed with us in 2011 he was pretty much black and blue from falls. Yet, he was still confident about heading north.

Stumpknocker and Mrs Gorp were giving him some sweet trail magic in VT and NH.

It's a fair bet he won't be pulling away from many of us.
If he's starting in front of you and you both keep hiking, you're pretty certain of meeting him somewhere.
I would think steady, not fast progress would be his style.
I look forward to meeting him, but I would suggest from what I read of his last attempt, you will be disappointed if you want a chat and he's not ready for a break.

Some Cimarron Quotes: In response to starting late: "We're burning daylight." In response to getting started on time (from his Naval Aviator Days): "Wheels in the wells at 0600." For those who want to chat and not hike: "Quit the gabbing, move on." For those who talk late into the night in a shelter (past 7 PM): "I like a good early start." For those who want to take his picture: "Sure." And then when he calls me he says, "everyone wants my picture." And for those who ask if he is still going hiking: "Does a bear **** in the woods?"
