There are almost too many to count. The AT makes a long, semi-circular run around Blacksburg from southwest to northeast. Here are a few:
1. Virginia 100 in Pearisburg
2. Virginia secondary 635 in Big Stony Creek Valley
3. Virginia secondary 613 up the mountain from Mountain Lake Hotel.
4. Virginia 42 in Sinking Creek Valley
5. Virginia secondary 621 in Craig Creek Valley
6. Virginia secondary 620 in Trout Creek Gorge.
North of there, you start getting closer to Salem and Roanoke.

If you head toward Salem and Roanoke from VA311 you can access Dragon's Tooth and McAfee's Knob. The Dragon's Tooth access is north of The Homplace restaurant and you need to take an access trail (boy scout trail?) to the AT. To get to McAffe's Knob, the AT crosses VA311 south of The Homeplace.
Speaking of The Homplace, go there! You won't be disappointed. Well.... unless you go sometime other than Thursday through Sunday evenings. Thats the only time they are open.
Btw, grad student?
no i have actually been here for a few years just havent gotten to do any hiking on the AT since i was a scout. moved up here from NC and went to school as an undergrad. taking time off and working full time but looking to spend some time on the trail.
thanks for the info.

A Virginia Gazetteer is a very worthwhile investment.
I'm such a geek. When I saw the title, I thought this thread was about Wi-Fi HotSpots.
I gotta spend more time hiking!
