As I read more and more in the Thru-Hiker's Guide, I've noticed that a large number of the shelters have privies. So this begs an obivious question. Do any, part, or all of them have toilet paper. Or is this something you must take care of yourself?

Take care of it yourself. Sometimes there is some there left in a mice resistant container, but don't count on it.Picture or Video 5687.jpg
Ultralight hikers just use their hands.
ALWAYS carry tp
That's what them big ol' leaves are for - go brown, er, I mean green ..............
Shelters are not generally stocked with TP. Many times maintainers or other hikers will leave TP in there as a good deed, but it shouldn't be expected.
I seem to have terrible luck and have found that the general rule is: if I bring extra TP, then every privy I pass will have some stocked, but if I don't have any of my own then there won't be any in the privy either,
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
Besides, once in a while you just aren't going to make it to the next shelter. The only time I'll consider not carrying TP, even on a day trip, is when I know that I can use a snowball.
(Seriously. It's not half as unpleasant as it sounds, and cleans very effectively. Disposal is no problem.)
I always know where I am. I'm right here.
Don't eat brown snow.
learn to recognize large Oak leaves....
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.
Woo
Most privies don't have toilet paper. That's why they refer to toilet paper, on the AT, as AT money.

Sometimes you have to laugh at yourself.
I collected partial roles of TP for a year before my hike, I included them in all my mail drops.
I forgot to bring any with me.
The trouble I have with campfires are the folks that carry a bottle in one hand and a Bible in the other.
You never know which one is talking.

I've noticed a lot of "answers" to the op's question that are not necessarily "straight forward". The answer above is (and those which agree with it) are. Bring your own toilet paper, and, if you are the generous, thoughtful type, bring extra, especially on a long hike. You never know when you'll need extra because of health "emergencies" or those of others.
As I live, declares the Lord God, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn back from his way and live. Ezekiel 33:11
I always carry TP with me even on day hikes. Only had to use it one time but I was glad I had it.

Unless the TP is in sealed container in a privy, mice will turn it into nesting material in short order.
Last spring I witnessed a thru hiker with an intestional virus trade a Bud Light that he had carried from Trent's Store to Wapiti shelter for a roll of TP.
bring your own TP
Never touch anyone elses tp roll, it is almost certainly contaminated contaminated
Find a few sticks and use first, then finish the job with tp, you wont need much.
Note to self, never get in a snowball fight with Kevin.
