About 40 miles from Queens NY
407 miles to Springer Mountain with an elevation gain from 25ft above sea level to 3780 feet above sea level. Obviously, no mountains where I live, but the kayaking is great!
Back in about 1975, I grew up in Keys Gap, near Harpers Ferry, WVA. The AT ran right through our property, due to some confusion about property lines and survey markers. My father and I moved an old fence line back a hundred feet or so, so that the hikers would have full access to the trail and the spring (now long dried up) that was on "our" side. Dad was a big proponent of ecology, conservation and the outdoors generally. Heck, as an 8 or 9 year old, I was walking the trail before I knew where it started and ended, picking up trash from the (now long gone) shelter. Matter of fact, just a few hundred feet before you cross Route 9, at the WVA/VA line, look to your left, going NOBO and you will see a white house with a tennis court in the front yard. (Yes, a tennis court) That was my boyhood home, and pretty much the end of my NOBO hike in 2015. Goin' Home.
440 miles........way to far....ocean but no mountains

62 miles from Springer (I'm near chattanooga)
Me: Ricky
Husky: Jack
Skeeter-Beeter Pro Hammock.
From Dalton, Georgia (65 mi above Altanta, 15mi south of Chattanooga)
I actually had to look it up, I live 4328.20 miles from Springer and 3213.08 miles from Katahdin
Too far. About a 2.5 hour drive heading either west or north. Wife and I are discussing where we want to live when we retire (hopefully soon!) and of course I'm arguing for a location much closer to the trail, maybe somewhere in the Berkshires.
My home is 3.7 miles from 3 different trailheads in SW Virginia. There is talk of my putting it on the market within the next 18 months sometime.
You never know just what you can do until you realize you absolutely have to do it.

7 miles or 20 minutes from the RT 40 trailhead. Hence I hike the AT more than nothing else.
5 hrs by plane, but it hasn't stopped us from flying to Maine (twice), Atlanta, and BWI (many times) primarily to hike parts of the AT, often for the 2d or 3rd time. Coming again in Oct 2014 for two weeks.
It's 4,320 miles from Madrid to Atlanta so about that to Springer.
Pasted from a previous thread on the subject:
About 52 road miles and 65 minutes from either the I-70 or US 340 road crossings in Maryland.
131 miles from Rock Fish Gap.
Live in Stoney Creek Tn about 10 miles from the AT and TN91, 15 from AT, 15 miles from 421 and AT (TN) and 30 miles from Dennis Cove Trail head (Hampton Tn)
I'm a short 25 min. drive from the James River foot bridge in Big Island, VA
