i did think this was going to be just another 1azarus is an idiot thread... but i feel your encouragement! if it is a warm day, i plan on interrupting my northbound hike by taking the side trail from the Taconic Crest to the Hoosic River near Williamstown, then will raft 8 or so miles north to the northern terminus of the Taconic Crest, then walk southbound back to the connector trail to Williamstown and finish there. Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, everyone, for your advice.

...so i just told my sea captain son about this. he thinks the water may be too cold to spend a couple of hours partly immersed without a wetsuit. this wouldn't just be a ford.

kayak Karl, am i back to idiot status?

oh. and no caching allowed, according to well established stupid adventurer rules -- so no tubes. this is an unsupported stupid adventure.

Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.

Good luck Laz eh hmm...do you have a life vest, hehe maybe use some long sticks layed flat to stiffen the ole vessel, and keep it from folding/bending there by enhancing surface area and displacment.

I suspect 1azarus is a pretty good swimmer or he wouldn't even consider this float trip. I too wish you a same and speedy trip.

8 miles? Better have a LITTLE bit of current, you don't want to swim or kick all that. See kids, this is what happens when you watch too many late night Man vs Wild episodes while drinking cheap beer?

I don't drink cheap beer. just moderately priced. next thing you'll be suggesting i make a raft out of empties -- with the emptying process just before the floating process.

Well, thanks for feeding my adventure fantasy. The following description has me thinking I may be, well, in over my head, so to speak. "After executing a U-bend and returning to flow near the railroad tracks, floaters should watch for waves ahead. These signal a Class II rapid, caused by a ledge and a three-foot drop. Paddle through the center of the wave and hole, and then bear far left to avoid a smaller rapid." Darn. Looks like I'll stick to walking.

Class II is beginner-grade whitewater. People do class II and III on tubes all the time. But you're right, a NeoAir isn't a tube.
I always know where I am. I'm right here.

Under the circumstances _ I hope Lazarus was drinking light beer when watching the Man vs Wild... or he won't remember what to do and sink.

Has anyone ever actually USED a pool float for a sleeping pad? It seems like for summer hiking it would be a reasonably lightweight yet thick/comfy pad. Hmm....
