The Farm in Virginia also reopened. It appears that the bad press is working to force logical decisions. Places that the park service closed that it doesn't operate are starting to reopen when stories are exposed.

I don't know if anyone has posted this, but apparently this is what would happen if found in a NP right now.

For freakin out loud!! It's public land!! If you're gonna give out tickets, you may as well do that on all federal protected lands!!

This might help in a few cases, but I have my doubts it will happen in the Eastern States.
Estes Park, on the eastern side of RMNP, would be very happy if Colorado footed part of the bill. I know our governor is very interested.
Between the floods and the park closure, poor Estes is taking a MAJOR financial hit. The elk season is a very important time there.
I usually avoid Estes Park, but I am thinking of going up there just to show some support. Go to the park (if reopened) and buy dinner after in Estes at the very least.

As I'm sure folks have heard, lots of western NP's have reopened, including I believe 8 of them in Utah and RMNP in Colorado using state funding to pay the federal workers. We just returned from a 4-day weekend in Utah's Glen Canyon NRA. Hopefully this is all moot very, very soon. sounds like we're close....
10k people when to RMNP alone this weekend (not counting trails away from the main gates such as the Wild Basin area).
I was happy to see RMNP open. Mrs Mags and I went on a hike and enjoyed perfect fall weather in the Wild Basin area. Good to be in the aspen with the crisp fall air.
True to a personal promise, bought something in Estes : Two cocktail glasses at the Stanley hotel. My brother and his girlfriend are big Stephen King fans and we have a visit back East starting tomorrow.
The people in the town seemed genuinely happy that tourists are again visiting, spending money, stopping to eat and so on. The nice lady in the hotel gift shop must have thanked us two or three times for stopping in.
Between the recent flooding and the recent park closure, Estes took a beating.
This re-opening helps. A lot.
ps. looks like AZ is hopping on board, too. Grand Canyon re-opened.

Who's footing the bill to operate GSMNP?
I seem to recall that I read that the state of Tennessee is paying something on the order of $300,000 to operate the park thru Sunday with the expectation that they will be repaid when the Federal Government gets their act together.
{EDIT}
Here's the details.

I hear that NC and TN are chipping in to open the Smokies today for the next five days. Hope this is true.

Yeah, its over. I just hope no one had abandoned their thru-hike because of the 16 day Gov. shutdown.
Shutdown ended. Closed.
