    Default Free State Hiker Hostel

You'd think after a decade Id've learned how to search this site oy vey!

I'm hearing from a semi reliable source that the spring has dried up at Ensign Cowall Shelter, big surprise right. Anyway, if that turns out to be the case would it be a bad idea to walk down to the Free State Hiker Hostel to use the spigot mentioned in the hostel description to get some water? I've never met the proprietors, and I'm not staying there. Any help would be much appreciated.

I had a mail drop sent there. I never met the owner in person but talked to her twice on the phone. She was very helpful in helping me get my mail even though I wasn't staying. She had stepped out when I arrived so we never met.

I would say give them a call but I am pretty sure they wont mind. They also have some sodas and ice cream for sell.

I was there last week and although the spring is not really running I was able to dip water out of the spring box and filter it

I really can't see any hostel that caters to hikers denying a hiker water because the trail is dry and you need it, but since you are preplanning this, always nice to give a call.

The owner, Bonepac was a 2006 thruhiker...and very hiker friendly.

Bonepac would never deny you water....or likely anything else you need. He and his family are great!

+1 on this hostel... my daughter stayed there. She had nothing but good things to say about this place and the owners.
