I went to see the movie yesterday. It wasn't bad. It wasn't great either. There really was nothing about hiking culture. It was more a movie about the two characters in the setting that was the AT. I'd watch it again sometime in the future.
I saw it yesterday and rather enjoyed it. I was with a group of non hikers and they really enjoyed it because they were not expecting it to be a documentary on hiking.
I am not young enough to know everything.
Not a classic, but I wasn't expecting one. It's a cute flick about two very old pharts (old friends long estranged, who have grown to be very different) sharing one final adventure. Which just happens to be on the AT. I could say more but don't want to spoil it for others. It's never quite fair to compare a movie to the book from which it derives.
Saw it . As a movie, I think its pretty bad. No real developed plot.
It deviates a lot from the book, for no real reason it seems. Some of the most entertaining parts of the book were simply butchered.
The actors couldnt pull off Brysons wry wit that made the book popular.
I just dont understand why they did such a poor job with much of the funny parts of the book . I think the writer just basically sucked .
For instance, Mary Ellen was a little over the top on stupid and non stop talking. What made it funny (book) when she told Katz he was too fat, was that SHE was pretty hefty too. But they put a reasonably average Mary Ellen in the movie. And still tried that line. I simply dont get what they thought with some of the changes.
About the 3 season tent bit with Mary Ellen, the tents were supposed to be the exact same tent, thats what made that funny. They changed that too. ???? senseless.
It honestly seems like the writer didnt understand what made the book humorous. And apparently the director didnt either, because execution was poor. It could have been much better and funnier with the right actors, director, and script.
I wasnt a big fan of Wild, but it was way better than AWITH, it had decent acting.

I am noticing a pattern. The older the viewer, the more apt they are to be tolerant of the movie. I noticed the opposite with Wild. The younger the viewer, the more they were tolerant of the movie. I hated Wild. From the various reviews I am seeing and hearing (not just on this site), I think I will enjoy A Walk... barely. Can't wait to find out. I will see it when the rest of Brunswick is watching the airshow sometime this weekend. Seen the airshow too many times to count.

There 's no comparison between Wild and AWITW. As books or as movies.
Not comparing movies, just how age groups critique them. I have not seen A Walk yet, so I have no basis for comparisons. But ya, I would suspect the movies have very little if anything in common.

i will see the movie tomorrow. and i know i will like it. i loathe critics
I checked the user ratings on IMDB. It's a small sample so far but what was odd was that it was the younger crowd giving the film the higher ratings.
Not surprised. My sample size is much smaller. I was going by reviews here and from friends across the country. Now I am worried that I won't like it.... but not enough to not waste money on it.

Females under 18 love it. ???

Scratch that. I misread the graph. One female under 18 really loves it.
If you examine those numbers, they seem to follow life trends in general. When you are young, you do dumb things because you don't know any better. As you mature, you do less dumb things. As you age, you do dumb things as you lose your mind. The mid life people like the movie the least. Good thing I am 54.

Lightweight movie but then that was Bill Bryson.
