    Here's my DIY cook kit, and the two popcan stoves I made for it. I actually tried a test burn with 50% iso an got it to light, so that tells me just how good they are.

    I have a 700 and have always used a fancy feast. I never tried doing a side burner for the reasons you mentioned. I would just do a taller pot stand. The hottest part of the flame is at the tip anyway. (sorry for the sideways picture)

    I have the same mug and a Toaks 750. I'm working on a bottle stove now to test them against a cat food can side burner. then I'd like to try my hand at making a Caldera cone for the whole thing. I like the stability aspect of the cone under the lip. And the apparent efficiency.

    I agree. I actually ordered a Caldera Cone for my upcoming AT thru hike.
