Hello, my name is Tom and I'm a Spamaholic. I lived in Hawaii from 1961 to 1964 and became a Spam addict during those years. I keep two or three cans of low sodium Spam in the cupboard most all the time. I like it fried with huevos, on sandwiches, and in casseroles. Yum!

And here is his episode of Bizarre Foods, where he talks about Spam, including a little bit of history and why it's so big in Hawaii. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jR8OW...id=P-uN7I4yZg4
P.S. If you don't want to watch the whole show, the Spam part starts ~12:30 in the timeline. Also, there's some good Boar hunting...
Spam is great stuff. I can get it at McDonalds here in Maui (Spam Egg & Cheese muffin) but my favorite is spam musubi. A ball of rice, a slab of spam on top, wrapped in nori seaweed. Yum! Its like a Hawaiian Powerbar. I just bought a whole stack of spam singles in foil for my JMT hike this summer, and I plan on making some spam musubi's on the trail.

I love spam.

the only time i eat spam is when i am hiking even then i have to put something else with it like cheese, i buy those foil single packs.
I've been testing a freezer-bag cooking musubi-style recipe, and it's working pretty good, though instant rice isn't as good as sushi rice. Instant white rice + spam single + boiling water go into the freezer bag to rehydrate rice and heat up spam. Once the rice is done, I add nori flakes + a bunch of furikake. It's not as good as what I make at home, but I think it will be pretty tasty on the trail. It does, however, make me thirsty for pass-o-guava juice...
From Wikipedia:
"As of 2003, Spam was sold in 41 countries on six continents and trademarked in over 100 countries.[10] In 2007, the seven billionth can of Spam was sold.[4]"
Despite the jokes, the stuff helped to feed a good part of the world during WW2. It sure isn't like a good steak, or chop, but it did fill a need:
From: http://www.americainwwii.com/articles/spam-again/
"...When America entered the war in 1941 and began shipping fighting men overseas, military officials bought large quantities of Spam for the same reason housewives bought it—it was cheap, easily transportable, had a long shelf life
—and yes, it was fairly nutritious.. ..."

Just ordered 2 SPAM singles for my upcoming section! SPAM rocks!
I'd never thought about using Spam in freezer-bag cooking. I'll need to check out if it is sold by the slice here. I eat it when I'm truck-camping and can fry it on my old Coleman stove. Yummie!
Octo....you may be right. The trip might require more than two.

I'm so confused, I'm not sure if I lost my horse or found a rope.
Anyone remember when the Spam cans used to opened with a key? What I like about Spam is that I'm convinced you could bury it in a hole for 25 years, dig it up, and it would still taste good. That's practicality!
Reading this inspired me to go pull out the small can of spam that I had in the cupboard, it turned out to be expired by about 6 months, but I doubted that would have any bearing on it's taste and I was correct.
I browned about 4oz of spam in the frying pan, cut it up and made an omelet with it along with some leftover avocado and gouda, and it turned out quite good. I had about a half ounce of the cooked spam left over so I gave it to my two dogs (That's a lie, In reality I made sure I had some extra so that they could try it too)...One of them grabbed it so fast that she had half of her mouth around my hand before she remembered her manners. The other dog decided that the cooked spam was one of the most amazing things she's ever tasted and has decided to follow me around the house just in case I happen to find some more of it.
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
For those of you who want spam no-cook ... welcome
Open the can - drop the spam - use a cheese slicer and cut the meat into strips. Because the meat is ham a BBQ-with apple butter, or Raspberry sauce 50-50 heat and warm it up and brush it on or dip the meat in... the spray the Nesco trays with non-stick and put in the dryer for 4-5 hours. - No soak - no prep. should come out 2/3rd lighter than the can - add some fresh crack pepper to boot if you like it... spice it up...Glad bag... dump the can.
Ahhh Spam... a favorite of Backpackers....
Dogs are excellent judges of character, this fact goes a long way toward explaining why some people don't like being around them.
Woo
We keep Spam in our hurricane kit. After the power's been off for three days and there's nothing left to eat, opening and eating the Spam is magical. The electricity is instantly restored! I've eaten it on the Trail only in similar duress, like being forced to resupply at the Shell Station in Rural Retreat, VA and finding nothing but white bread, Spam, and SlimJims. Also wondrous double Little Debbie Oatmeal Cakes, with three layers of cake and two of creme, 900 calories each!
Yes! America . . . the world loves SPAM!! I have it in my garage waiting to be put into resupply boxes. I have to admit that I have tuna and Salmon also. Its bad but I have to admit that I like the Spam (in my thinking when I am getting ready to go out to hike) better then the Tuna and Salmon! Oh, ya gotta love it!
