Default Fire ban on in the Gila

A ban on open fires will begin on 4/21 for the Gila National Forest. Stoves that do not have a valve to turn off and on are considered open fires. (Alcochol, Esbit, wood burning) I think the forests to the north and along the trail up to middle Colorado will follow suit soon.

The Gila and Apache National Forests have now enacted a ban on open fires, which includes any stoves without a manual off/on valve. Alcohol, charcoal, wood, and esbit stoves are no longer allowed. The document is here:

The new norm in the West it seems.

I know people quibble and debate if alcohol stoves are really banned (I am not one of them), but it just makes sense. All stoves are dangerous on some level, but I've come to believe alcohol stoves are more prone to accidents.

Go stoveless or use a canister stove. (Or whitegas if feeling old school. )

EDIT: IF the stove w/o an on/off valve are banned.

I went by the CDT crossing outside of Silver City NM two days ago and it was dry dry dry. Saw about 5 , I guess CDTers, walking into Silver City.
