    Default Bear canister advice?

Hoping to do a 2 week jmt thru late aug-early sept. I've never used a canister as all my hiking has been done on the southern AT. My lil jack Russell always hikes w me so I've never even hung a bear bag much less used a canister. I plan to resupply at reds, mtr and do avg 15 mpd. I'll be carrying a ula circuit. Can't see spending tons of $$ on a bearicade but would consider a BV even though wouldn't hardly ever use. Should I rent or buy? What size ? Thx

Renting at Yosemite is easy. If I recall correctly it is $5.

If you do end up buying a Bear Vault, you can sell it after the hike without much of a loss, maybe $15 or so less than what you paid for it. You can sometimes arrange beforehand with someone who is planning a hike after yours. I bought two BV500's with the intention of selling them after the hike, but ended up planning my next hike instead, so I still have them.

If you are on a 14 day plan, I would think you would be taking around 7 days to go from MTR-> Whitney Portal. If you eat a lot or like bulky foods, go with the 500, its not too much extra weight and I personally think worth the peace of mind.

Also, don't underestimate how this trip will affect you. Don't be surprised if three weeks after you finish, you find yourself planning to do it again. In that case, it might be good to buy instead of rent.

Plenty of people repeat it EVERY year.
not many 200 mile + trails you can say that about.

This may sound snarky, especially if you are on a budget, because I know costs run up with this trip, especially paying for a plane ticket. But think of it as an investment that will allow you to hike in one of the most beautiful places in the world, while making the whole experience safer for you, others, and the bears.

I was on a budget too, and believe me, a through hike of the JMT is worth so much more than whatever you are spending to do it.

Bearikade: bullet proof, quality machining, carbon fiber. Buy quality once. You can rent them.
Bear can capacity: a tip often mentioned here, your first day's food can be in your pack. The rest goes in your can before bed.
    Have fun!

Nobody picked up on the non-approved status of the Bearikade. You saved a bunch of money.

It's $5/day I believe, at least according to the Bearikade website.

I think what you can rent (for $5 a week) in Yosemite is the basic Garcia canister, which will be hard to get all your food into for longer trail segments (like Muir Ranch to Whitney).
    See http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisi...canrentals.htm

I'm going to use a Bearikade Expedition canister so that I have the room I need. Not gonna buy one. I would be renting, but I got an offer to borrow one from a very generous soul. Much appreciated.

OK. I give up. There was a thread in the last 1-2 weeks with a list that listed the Bearikade as UNAPPROVED.
Found it. Rocky mountains-grizzly country. Sorry, wrong trail.
Bearikade has not passed the IGBC testing, per their Jan 2014 listing.

For a listing of all IGBC-approved food storage containers and the like, see pages 4 and later at:

    http://www.igbconline.org/images/pdf/012314_products_list.pdf

Each national park can set their own requirements. Yosemite NP still lists the Bearikade Weekender and Expedition cans (1716 and higher) as approved for use in the park. SEKI usually follows the Yosemite guidelines.

Wish I knew why IGBC hasn't approved Bearikades. I assume they have been submitted for testing in the past.
Sorry. Bearikade for the JMT it is!

and you could buy it, and resell it, for about what it cost you to rent it.
resale is very , very good. Especially to californians who must also pay sales tax for a new one.

My BV500 weighs 2# 8.1 ounces. Specs say 2# 9oz. Not 3lb, sorry. Still, that Berikade is sa-weet. When we hiked the JMT I carried the BV, my wife a borrowed Berikade of about the same size, about 7 ounces lighter. The extra bonus for her Berikade was that it was easier to open (using a nickel). The BV's are difficult to open for us claw-less humans! Next time we do a hike needing bear canisters, we'll spring for our own Berikade (our borrowing source went away, alas).
