I really like my Zpacks Hexamid. Before I got it, I used to use a silnylon Gatewood Cape (get a Wild Oasis if you don't want to wear your shelter as a poncho). The pyramid shape is my favorite tarp configuration.

I hear that Gossamer Gear will soon be coming out with a new crop of shelters and I'm eager to see what they will have. I love their packs and trekking poles. Disclaimer: I am such a fan that I became a "trail ambassador" for GG, so I may be biased. ; )

TarpTent Moment for me . . . Had the BA Flycreek UL1 but didn't like the front entry - decided the side entry was better for me.

Finally sprang for my first piece of cuben gear, the Zpacks hexamid solo-plus (w/ beak and bug netting). "Only" $390, palatial in size for one (might actually work for two occasionally), 16 ounces total including cords. I was skeptical at first, but used it for 3+ weeks on the AT this spring, worked like a charm.

Still have my trusty BS Fly Creek 2, used maybe 100 total nights, and will use when with wife and can share the heavy tent load (2.5 pounds).

Bearpaw Liar, says 9oz but that is bottomless, I tried silnylon single wall tents but the hard rain came through and got everything wet. It mist right through the fabric, the cuben is waterproof, no mist.

I will soon own a zpacks hexamid solo plus tarp and bugnet with the cuben floor

  17. #57

Default What ultra lite tent/shelter are you using

I bought a Cuben Lightheart Gear Solong 6 last Christmas, and also just got a Zpacks duplex tarp and floor, at 14 oz. I've found that for the most part, bug netting isn't really needed.

I like the looks of the ZPacks solo "bathtub" cuben ground tarp. I am thinking I might spring for the big $$$ for cuben for that item. Pair that with a tarp with a beak, I think.

I do like a side entry shelter. I am looking around, online.

My bivy provides insect protection, otherwise I use a headnet. If insects are that bad, I wear gloves and stretch gaiters.

I used to use the ZPacks Hexamid Solo Plus and still use it when sharing a shelter. Polycryo groundsheet

Now I'm into the MLD Cuben Poncho Tarp. Still using polycryo groundsheet, no bivy (yet). Still not 100% confident with it in all conditions but I'm getting some good experience with it. 5-6 ounces for rain gear and shelter is nice
