I found this story about her rather heartwarming.. http://www.trailtherapy.org/Grandma_Gatewood.html

She reminds me of my own grandmother in some ways....a formidable woman...definitely inspirational.
"Maybe life isn't about avoiding the bruises. Maybe it's about collecting the scars to prove we showed up for it."
She had UL gear before there was a label and rules for UL gear.
Keds, a shower curtain and a sack aren't too far from trail runners, a Cuben tarp and the lightest modern packs.

Very cool in my opinion! She probably took just what made the most sense, and what she had available. I love that sorta outlook. Course, somethings are rather learned the hard way then I think, but I admire an adventurous spirit!!

I bet she lived modestly at home too...
Yeah, I read she was a farmers wife and had like 11 children, which I think can be awesome. But BUSY!! And lots of hard work.
WaxQueen
11 children! No wonder she walked the trail, probably looking for some "alone" time!
Lol! She did it when she was older too, so I suppose maybe the kids had all moved out and she decided she had the free time!!

Grandma Gatewood hiked through New England in the worst imaginable conditions in 1955. In 1955, New England had floods worse than any seen since (worse than hurricanes Irene or Sandy). Hurricane Connie dropped 6"+ in Conn and Mass followed 5 days later by Hurricane Diane with up to 20" in 24 hours . 184 people died in the floods. Grandma Gatewood hiked through the worst of this. It's very impressive that she survived.
There's a new book about her:

Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.
Sorry!!!! I meant no offense! I know I'm not as thoughtful as I could be about certain things..
Though I was just trying to express that her age along with the number of children she had, makes me assume that the children had all grown up, and she decided to pick up some old dreams, or that she just had the free time now.
Wow Snowleopard!!! That sounds scary! Can you imagine? I'll have to look into that book!!
YES!!! I've heard of Peace Pilgrim!!! Very, very cool lady too!!!!

And women have been making hiking headlines a lot lately, with two women recently breaking the speed records for the AT (Jennifer Pharr Davis) and the PCT (Anish)
Also, there is no "women's record" ... NOBODY has ever finished the AT faster than Jennifer, and Anish is the fastest for an unsupported hike!!
