My son is full of energy and plan to keep his pack very light...well under 8lbs..woody gap to ??? Day 1 hope to tent camp near blood mtn.. I'm planning on milage as he feels up to so 20+ miles is what I'm thinking for 3 days...any input would be appreciated..

5 to 8 miles per day seems like a reasonable distance as your son gets started.
Pack weight should be no more than 20% of his body weight. If you can manage to keep his pack at 8lbs, then you should be well below the 20% mark (My boys are more like 10-12lbs at that age).

Hogpen Gap I guess may be an option. 3 8 mile days.

    0.0 GA60-Woody Gap, GA
7.0 Woods Hole Shelter Side Trail, GA
    8.2 Blood Mtn. Shelter, GA
    10.6 US19 and 129-Neels Gap, GA
    16.6 GA348-Tesnatee Gap, GA
17.3 Whitley Gap Shelter Side Trail, GA
    17.5 GA348-Hogpen Gap, GA

I believe there is parking at Hogpen Gap, GA. I don't know anything about how safe though.

If that is to short, add some side trails, go Lake Winfield Scott, which would add 2 miles to hike (there and back). That would put you at 19.5 miles. Also can do Dockery Lake trail, which will add about 7 miles.

    Just some thoughts.

If you plan on Sleeping at Woods Hole and Blood Mtn. Shelters, you will need a bear canister. Any stops between Jarrod Gap and Neel Gap requires a bear canister.

Yeah I agree that is a nice section. I've already done that was hoping to do another section I haven't done.
