I encountered many people at the shelters in that stretch, who had AT&T, and they all complained of no service.

Another solution for that is one of the prepaid Verizon resellers, or Verizon prepaid. Get a el-cheapo 'semi-disposable' phone, but it needs to use Vz's service.

ATT stinks in the NC/VA. mountains. My cousin had decent success with US Cellular.

I called my wife from Wayah Bald tower (use AT&T). Not very much service the rest of the time, but I keep my phone on airplane mode while hiking so I could've missed many service spots.

I have been told that AT&T'S service emphases technology for the consumer where Verizon's service emphases coverage. But I would not _expect_ to get any bars on the AT. You probably need to assuage your wife's concerns some other way. Mentioning lack of cell phone coverage might do it.

Just did this section as part of a month long hike. Had AT&T service at the top of both towers on Wayah Bald and Wesser Bald. That was it, though. As a mom who was out there without my kids, that is the first AT section on which I plan to take them. Loved that stretch! Have fun!

Agreed, I've hiked this area a lot and usually have AT&T service from Wayah and Siler Bald.

You should have him get a picture at the same locations when he's full-grown. I'll bet he almost reaches the AT sign!
