It's like porn... you can't define it but you know it when you see it.

Last month on my JMT hike, a 45-50ish year old women stopped & took a break with our "trail family", we all hiked on one at a time, when it was just one 22 year old young man left & the women took ALL of her clothes off & told him, "I will never look this good again in my life", handed him her camera & said please take my picture & she posed in many many different poses.

What do you think would happen if a man did this to a 22 year old women??

Gotta love long trails, Ya just never know what kinda wildlife you'll come across.

Wow!! That is beyond creepy. Sounds like that lady needs some serious consulting regarding body imagine issues and socially appropriate behavior.

A surgeon I worked with is a creep. Always making inappropriate comments/jokes despite knowing they made people in the room uncomfortable. Partly a power trip for him because he knew they weren't going to do anything to him despite being reported for it. The part that made it creepy was that right after he would make the comment(as) he would immediately turn to you with a little smirk and say "now you're not going to report me are you?" Made me want to vomit!! He finally got the hint not to touch me when I started talking about the definition of assault & battery.

Haven't met a creep on the trail yet though

Went to the Dr years ago and when he was checking my prostrate he started whistling. I was ok with this until I realized he was whistling the Oscar Meyer song....

There's a good point to be made here:
If "Ethel" does something inappropriate, we think it's funny (and weird and creepy) but not too many people would feel physically threatened.
But if a dude did this, I'd be creeped out, and if alone, I'd definitely feel threatened. And I wouldn't think it was funny unless he was really old (like 95) and clearly no threat.
The fact is, males and females are differently sized and differently motivated, and our reactions to odd behavior has to be understood in that context.

A creepy person is a person that isn't like you. So, in the case of the lady mentioned above, had she been a young, beautiful woman, the men wouldn't have found her to be creepy, but exciting. The same with women. If an older man does something they think is creepy, often it would be seen as something not negative if it was done by a young attractive man.

The one point I'll make, because I've discovered it as I've gotten older, is that older people don't feel older. So, they don't think doing young things is creepy, especially if around young people. I went back to college when I was in my 40's and 50's, and worked with many young people on projects. Most were fine with it. I had a great time. Same with the AT, where mostly younger people are backpacking.

So my advice, if you think someone is creepy, first avoid them. That's for your sake, and for their sake. No one wants to be around someone that feels that way about them. Second, take a good hard look at yourself and analyze why you thought they were creepy. I might be for good reason, or might be for a goofy reason.

Was she attractive? Sounds like a missed opportunity for an even better story for a certain 22 year old young man

Not attractive but it made for some great laughs for the next week or so.

I just thought it was so fitting for this conversation!! Flip the tables & the cops may have been called on the guy. BUT we we're in California ya know .

A few days later, another interesting solo 45ish lady, walks right up to our group, looked straight at me and said "Your not Brad".......... Um NO I'm not,..... we all just cracked up. She was a cool eccentric women who could have been labeled as creepy, but instead of labeling her, we had great conversation, laughs & exchanged N & S trail info. Gotta love our misfit "trail community".

What do you need explained? You seem to have a pretty good grasp.

Some people think theirs is ice cream and the world is full of those who are different, who will steal their goods or attack them if they get half a chance, or even (shudder) make them feel uncomfortable.
