LOL... the Mayor wasn't "attacked" by a bear, he fell off a log.![]()
I know the mayor up there... My first thought was: "how much bacon grease was dripped down the front of his shirt when this occured."
Seriously, JayBird, this should be titled: Mayor and friends attack black bear.
When will the extreme bear paranoia end?![]()
Well I ain't skeered of no bear. I'll never hang my food. I've eaten bear. It ain't that good. They make nice rugs/wall hangings.
Me neither. I've yet to to try any bear; mostly since it's not on many menus. I'm in the market for a good foot rug. I'll keep an eye out.
Yes, they can be eaten and are good if cooked correctly. Most of the meat is is pretty tough and stringy - like the cheaper beef roasts. Slow cooking renders them tender and tasty.
I was a protective services worker in a county near this mayor's county. Many of the poor in Appalachia get meat in their diet by hunting. I often got to sample the many, many ways mountain ladies prepare bear meat while on home visits. Bears are prized not only for their meat, but for their lard (fat). It is similar to pork lard and makes the best biscuits you will ever eat.
Couldnt rightly call this a bear attack, more like a mayor and friend attack on the bear. I am sure that the bear was pretty grumpy after being shot.
Just another example of why politicians, local and national, should give-up hunting.
If you shoot a duck and it hits you on the head as it falls is that an attack?
I feel sorry for the bear, not old "Boss Hogg".
Here's a similar story from Pennsylvania:
Bear shot by hunter bites back before dying
[Ed. Note] This article is also further proof that hunters claims about "clean kills" are usually false.
HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A black bear bit and clawed a hunter who had just shot it four times in what game authorities said appeared to be a first for the state.
Samuel H. Beauchamp, 47, said he was approaching the downed 320- pound bear in Rothrock State Forest in central Pennsylvania on Monday, the first day of bear-hunting season, when it came after him.
Beauchamp, of nearby Newville, had just shot the bear with a .444- caliber rifle and was within 15 feet of it. He turned to run, but the bear put a claw around his hip and bit him twice, once in each thigh, before dying.
"The bear wasn't attacking 100 percent. I mean really, it was dead on its feet when it came up. If it would have been 100 percent I wouldn't have been standing there," Beauchamp said Friday.
Other hunters heard a growl and came to Beauchamp's aid.
"It was shock at first. It's like he came alive, like 'boom.' I guess he growled, like the other people heard. That motivated me to turn around and start running away," he said.
Game commission bear biologist Mark Ternent said the attack was the first case known to state officials in which a bear had attacked a hunter who had just shot it and was attempting to recover it.
Beauchamp was released from the hospital after about two hours of treatment. One bite went down to the bone.
"I didn't feel any pain after it happened," he said Friday. "I'm a little sore now."

What fun is bear hunting if the bear doesn't win once in a while? I'd like to see the odds evened out a bit. How about a bear season where hunters only go out with a sling shot?
If we look at the path, we do not see the sky. We are earth people on a spiritual journey to the stars. Our quest, our earth walk is to look within, to know who we are, to see that we are connected to all things, that there is no separation, only in the mind.

I don't post on here much (mostly read), but COME ON!!
Bear attack... more like the bear was scared out of its mind after someone shot it and it as running "toward" or "in the direction of" the clumsy major. This bear was only interested in getting away from the hunting party that was after it.
Bear "attack" HA!!
Personally I have a narrow window for "bear attack". If an idiot walks up and kicks a bear and the bear in turn eats 'em... that isn't even an attack in my book. An attack would have to be an unprovoked action by a bear resulting in bodily harm.
As for the taste of bear... my father and I hunted in Quebec and let me tell you the taste of bear... well... has all the delicacy of musk ox hoof. It was the first and last time I go bear hunting.
I use to be a bear paranoid person (from all the stories). I hiked in Shenandoah this past summer and saw 5 bears, which is helping to change my mind on things.
One was in the brush right off the trail. I got close, 15 fetish, and it was out and away before I even saw it was there. I had a small stroke, but everything was good. I saw a sow and two cubs from about 50 yards out and she was very good about watching me and making sure I wasn't going to encroach on her space. That was an exciting citing and it lasted for about 15 minutes. The last bear was a black blur and that bear was a long way away... who knows, something like 100 yards.
I am trying to get to the point where my reaction isn't automatic fear. I hope I eventually can see a bear and just watch and not have a heart rate of 180.
Seeing wildlife, especially bears, in the wild is always one of the highlights of my hikes.
