Books on AT written by women

Just finished "Walking Home" by Kelly Winters. Excellent book. Next on my list, "There are Mountains to Climb" by Jean Deeds. Any other favorites out there? Anything to highly recommend? I can add to my x-mas wish list.

If you can find a two volume book set entitled "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" by James R. Hare, there are great stories by Dorothy Laker. She thru-hiked in 1957, 1964 and did a complete section hike between 1962 and 1972. I really like her story, and she is a good writer.

Technically, it's not the AT per se but by all means, read Jan LiteShoe's The Ordinary Adventure.

I enjoyed a very simple book:
A Woman's Journey on the Appalachian Trail, by Cindy Ross

I believe it is out of print, but still available from used book stores. Includes the authors ink sketches in place of photos. An easy read, but enjoyable.

Cindy also has written an enjoyable account (much longer) of her PCT adventure.

"A Season on the Appalachian Trail", by Lynn Setzer. It follows several hikers on their 1996 thruhikes. Setzer didn't thruhike herself, so it's not a hiker's memoir; still, it's an excellent book.

Agreed, it's a great book. But once she's north of Maine Junction (where the serious hiking begins ), it's about the LT, not exactly the AT. Minor detail.

"Walking the Dream" is a pretty good account of a woman's thru hike. It is written by Ellen Wolfe - a professor where I went to college.

I liked "Walking Home" as well, although some parts scared me a little bit, I liked Winter's honesty. You could try "A Journey North" by Adrienne Hall. There is some environmental conservation included, but the hiking narrative is well-written and poetic. And definitely read the Deeds book, it's really fun.

"A Journey North" was a good read.......the book was her Master's Degree Thesis which is why there is a "Research Paper" overtone to it. I also enjoyed Winter's honesty in her book. She put it all out there and that took guts.

I'm working on one now, actually.

But read some of the others - Jean Deeds, Kelly Winters, Leslie Mass. I also liked White Blaze Fever - male author though. And Bill Irwin's book Blind Courage. Neither to me were macho-type he-man books but men that struggled with various trials yet were able to accomplish their goals.

maybe not what you seem to want (a book about 'the experience'), but Victoria Logue (with husband Frank) wrote a book called "the Appalachian Trail Backpacker", and iirc, has written another, more from a woman's perspective... might give you an author to google, if nothing else.
