Anyone have the AT guide on Shenandoah Park?

The next two weekends I'm taking some friends on some short AT day hikes in the northern section of the Shenandoah Park, and I'm trying to locate some good shuttle points. I ordered the Shenandoah guide from the ATC store, but there is a backlog, and I was told today it still might be awhile before I get it. So, can someone help me? This weekend my plan was to actually start a little north of the park at US 522 (which is about 3.5 north of the park boundary). My idea for the hike was one of about 8 to 10 miles. Is there any spot to park a shuttle car that is about 4 to 6 miles south of the northern most end of the section covered in the Shenandoah AT guide book? And from that point, is there a spot 8-10 miles south of that for the following weekend hike?

7.6 miles south on the AT from Rt 522 there is parking for 14 cars at Jenkins Gap.

9.3 miles south on the AT from Rt 522 there is "some parking" at Hogwallow Gap. Guide says SDMP 14.2. I think that means the park milepost.

16.5 miles south on the AT from Rt 522 (SDMP21.1) there is a paved parking area.

The Elkwallow Wayside is about 19 miles south from RT22. That's a picnic area so there should be parking there. SDMP 23.9

Be aware that Skyline Drive can be closed for ice and snow.

I am fairly sure you can buy the PATC maps and probably also the guide at the entrance stations for SNP - if you arrive while they are open.

You should find everything you need at http://appalachiantrail.rohland.org. The website tells where the trail heads/parking areas are located as well as directions and area pictures.

I'll give you a warning about buying maps and trail guide sets in the SNP. Last summer, I bought the complete 3-map set with guide book at the Loft Mountain wayside concessionaire. Didn't pay close enough attention, but what they sold me was a _1999_ set! I thought I was getting the most up-to-date stuff by going "to the horse's mouth." Instead I got "took" with old, out-of-date info.

Buyer beware in the SNP.

I'm not sure that those maps are updated very often. I think I once read where the AT maps are only updated every 10 or 12 years. SNP maps are probably the same. Anyone know for sure on this? I bought my SNP maps last year and I think they are 1999 as well. Will double check when I get home.

The maps were fine. The ATC Guidebook was NOT. I thought they were updated each year. Right? Wrong?

I still don't think they revise those guide books very often, I'd guess not as often as the maps. My guidebook is dated 1999, my maps are dated 1995, revised in 2003. So there's an eight year spread on the maps.

Pretty sure those are the maps PATC is still printing. I just got SNP central this summer directly from PATC and I (don't have it in front of me at the moment) think it's the same revision.

It amazes me how easily my maps grow legs and walk away... it also amazes me how easily the map collections of my friends grow...

ATC now has the PATC Shenandoah Guide package back in stock. The latest guidebook edition is 1999; maps in the packet range from 2003 to 2007. If you have a back order with us, I expect it will be shipped early next week, if it hasn't been shipped already.

These days, most official A.T. guidebooks and maps are revised roughly once every ten years. PATC (who publishes the official A.T. maps for Shenandoah through southern PA) is the exception; they revise their maps (but not their guidebooks) much more frequently. The A.T. Data Book and A.T. Thru-Hikers' Companion are revised every year.

One exception to my earlier post saying that Shenandoah Guides backordered from ATC would be shipped soon: If you had a Shenandoah Guide package back ordered as part of the "Guide Special," it will be shipped when the missing NC/GA Guide comes in around mid-March. If you need the Shenandoah Guide sooner, just contact the Ultimate Trail Store directly and they'll send the Shenandoah Guide ahead separately. The backordered NH/VT Guide package will follow a few weeks after the other two.

GD, sorry for the tardy thanks for the offer. I appreciate it. I'm still counting on the ATC eventually getting me the SNP guide (they already have my money for it!). The short hike this weekend went smoothly (what perfect weather for a mid-Feb. day), and I think I'll be able to get by on the info others have shared for the second short hike I have planned for this weekend, but really, thanks anyway. BTW, good to communicate with someone from the good ol' capital district (I'm originally from Schenectady).

you might want to think about compton gap its about 6 or so miles south of 522. don't plan on the spring at tom floyd wayside to have any water it has come to a slow drip.
