There goes the free topos.
There goes the free topos.
Bummer. I'm the supervisor of a library map room and refer patrons to topozone.com often. Now I guess I'll have to tell people "it ain't free anymore."
Stuff truly worthwhile is usually worth paying for.
Ya want it? Pay for it, if the cost is reasonable.
Ya don't wanna pay for it?
Go without.
Non issue.
Yeah, like google earth!
Satellite images (i hear they're even fairly up to date in the states) as well as topo (USGS quads) are available for free. Here are some instructions if you haven't figured it out: http://www.gearthblog.com/blog/archi...opo_map_i.html
I really don't know how you could compete with THAT!
There is a google applet that does topos.
I found it at the Dunigan's Tennessee Lanform site.

Its move as smooth as regular Google Maps but its free.
Google and partners should also be in progress of updating their earth imagery. It looks a whole lot clearer and defined

Just have three little words..."Go Hike It"
I know anything worth having is worth buying. I liked it because I could flip between journals and maps to follow peoples progress on trails.
Usually when a free service gets bought up, another comparable free service is started....MSN bird's eye view is very cool, blows google maps away for helicopteresque view.(not topos)
Check this site out.

DAMNIT. Stupid trails.com is going to make us pay to use the bathroom in the woods soon enough. Now where to go for free maps?

Enjoy it while it's wild. Soon enough we'll be hiking indoors.
