    Default Small hiker world...

So, I was volunteering on a 100 mile bike event this past weekend (up at 4:30 am yesterday!!! ). Owning a pick up truck ,I am a popular person for lugging things around.

Anyway, I was in charge of an aid station on the Silverthorne to Copper Mtn bike path. I am sitting down when I see
a person with trekking poles, nylon pants, trail runners and a light pack...on a bike path!

Asked the gentleman if he was hiking the CDT. He was a bit surprised and said yes. I introduced myself as "Paul Mags". He smiled and said he "knew me" from Yogi's guidebook and posting on the forums. Turns out the hiker was Colter (who posts on WB every so often)!

Naturally we talked trail (yep..a lot of snow up there this year!), I loaded him up with oranges, bananas, brownies, etc. Talk about a small world!

Looking up at the very snow covered divide, I'd be taking the low route, too!

Anyway, I had a great weekend (if tiring!). And seeing a CDT hiker that I had talked to previously made it cool, too

I just got Yogi's book(s) a couple of weeks ago and thought... hey, I know that guy.... plus I'm guessing maybe the oft-quoted "Jim A."

Mags, it was great you took care of him with the food you had, good karma. Colorado's a great state, especially with guys like you helping out others on the trail. A little trail magic, as everyone likes to say!

And, Double D, I've had good karma all around (trail, friends, family, etc.) so I like to give back when I can.

Was at Bear Mtn today buying a yearly parking sticker when I heard someone asking for the bus sked into NYC and was able to give a ride to two AT hikers from Oklahoma Honeymoon and Short stick! Its all in the timing!

Yeah..I noticed that before. I really have to take a look at it now. If the CDT is Wilderness (as opposed to wilderness), than the brooks range is WILDERNESS!

my boss up here sold him some property and then she casually told me he hiked..he cam to the green house and we talked trail a bit. Even in Alaska I stumble on the very occasional long distance hiker. yes, small world... he has a pretty good journal of his Cdt hike as well as tons of info on the Brookies..

Heh..naah. It is a volunteer name tag. Most people had "Bob" or "Jill" or whatever. My friend Julie made me a "special one" (as she put it). It said PMags..

Hey Mags, I met Pickle and Garlic in Franklin, NC last April. We ended up having dinner together at a nearby Thai restaurant. Somehow we ended up talking about WB and some of the members here. They mentioned that they know you! So yup, it's a small hiker world.

Those two were doing some long miles and taking very few days off. Any idea where they are now?
Some people take the straight and narrow. Others the road less traveled. I just cut through the woods.

Garlic is doing great! They expect to be done by July 21st.

We went skiing together a fair amount this winter before he took off for the AT.

Seems like they are enjoying the AT quite a bit! When Garlic hits Crawford Notch, he will be an "triple crowner". More importantly, though, I think he is just LOVING his AT experience! (well, except for a late night cell phone call in his last entry.. )

Wow, July 21st! I am not surpirsed though. They were bookin'!! And yes, they were really enjoying their time out there. I had some physical problems on my section hike and I was a bit down about it. But they gave me lots of pointers on gettting my gear weight down, needs and wants, nutrition, etc. I felt really lucky to have met them. I will check out their journal. Thanks!

Speaking of small hiker world, I was out this summer picking up the CDT section between Wolf Creek Pass and Monarch Pass, and ran into two other hikers. They mentioned that they had just run into d=rt in town...I'd hiked most of the CDT with d=rt last year, and he was just picking up the same section as me.

Default It was great meeting you Mags!

It really is a small world! I sure was surprised to run across you. I appreciate the trail magic, too. Kind of seems like a long time ago already.

Yappy, it was fun to see you back in Alaska, too. A ranger in Yellowstone said something like "There sure are a lot of people from Fairbanks on the CDT this year."
