skeeters can be down right nasty on the p.c.t. bring a net and make sure your shelter is skeeter proof. i saw people with no floor tents and tarps with no netting and they were wishing they had them.

That's one of the reasons I switched to a tent rather than a tarp at Kennedy Meadows. I thought that my friends who said I'd want a headnet in the Sierra were full of crap. But they were right, and having a tent also helped with the insane, DEET-proof mosquitos.

I switched gear from the AT to PCT. On PCT I had a WM 15degree 850 bag 33 oz; a Tarptent Rainbow, also 33 oz and a Granite Gear Nimbus Meridian 56 oz. I carried a lot less clothing weight. I used a piece of Tyvek as a ground cloth and often slept on that. I also had a head net. I did a lot of "cowboy camping", just throwing down my pad and bag on the tyvek. Occasionally, the mosquitoes came out later and my headnet came in handy.

I could probably have gotten away with a lighter pack, but I really like the way the GG carries and a couple of days I had 7 liters (about 16 pounds) of water on board when I started the day in the desert as one can't rely on water caches being available.

I was lucky in encountering rain on only 5 days in the 5 months I spent on the trail. On one occasion, I was lucky enough to hike into one of the few shelters along the trail in OR just after Mt. Jefferson where I holed up for the remainder of the day and the following day during a miserable, cold rain.

I think you would be more comfortable with a tent/netting in Oregon and Washington.

Mosquitoes were horrible in Oregon. I carried a Tarptent Rainbow and was grateful.
