Basic 6-person shelter design with picnic table balanced in the short front-yard. Privy to the right. I didn't check out the spring in early June 2005, but it was said to be pretty mediocre. The next reliable water south is Helveys Mill Shelter, but that is half a mile off-trail. To the north you cross Kimberling Creek, but it is very wide, slow-moving, and downstream from a timber mill. At the road go left 0.4 miles to Trent's Grocery or continue for another mile or two to lovely Dismal Creek Falls.

Water source is a PITA trickle, but not really any other options nearby. I was here with two hikers named Jaybird and Inchworm in June. There was a very friendly butterfly that joined us for dinner, perching whoever's arm or leg was most convenient. Also a nice sunset filtered through the trees.

Lots of space around the shelter to set up tents.

Last June both marked water sources were dry. Grafitti on the shelter indicated this problem had persisted for years. In my opinion this shelter should be marked "dry" or at least unreliable water.

We found a small pool of water at the water source. It was possible to pump it (or dip a little at a time). In the technical sense of the word, there was water. Just very little. And it's only June.
A fair hiker, but a little unbalanced.

I spent a winter night there and couldn't find the water source in the snow.
