I picked up an Aqua Mira "emergency water filter" the other day and it says it will filter up to 20 gallons of water. I figured it'd be good to have for day trips and putting in my saddle bag on long bike rides. My only question is: how do I know when the filter is no longer working?

My understanding is that it gets slowly clogged so it no longer works when you can no longer suck hard enough to practically get water.

That's what I'd assumed, but wasn't sure. As cheap as these things are, I might grab a couple more. It's super light and quicker than using the tablets I usually use.

When you start spewing smelly liquids from both ends every 10 minutes or so, then you know your filter isn't working anymore.
