Matt Brett, chief of the Kempton Fire Company, said the group did not have a map or a flashlight and misjudged how long it would take them to get out of the woods.

Fire crews have taken part in six rescues along the Appalachian Trail this year, Brett said.

In each case, hikers misjudged the time and were not properly equipped, he said.

It happens every year and at least once a year Reading Eagle calls it to the attention of their readers.
