For those folks who own Pacer Poles, are they an improvement? I don't have anything at all, I just pick up a stick and smooth it off.
Just wondering.

Pacers, like any two sticks, are an improvement over nothing....or one.
No strap, no collapse.
Straps are very important to reduce the effort of holding the poles.
Buy Leki's. They are the strongest, lightest and best.
Can't help you with the poles, but thanks reminding me of that old John Prine tune. "Send my mouth way down south and kiss my ass goodbye."
"Throw a loaf of bread and a pound of tea in an old sack and jump over the back fence." John Muir on expedition planning
Pacer poles are great for the knees in my opinion especially going downhill. The weight is on the fatty part of the hand where it should be and you will find that the strap does very little and that the natrual grip of your hand does the work with little effort. They kep your hands at a natural angle and thus they don't tire at all.
Hope that helps,
Dean
The straps on leki poles (and other conventional poles) can play the same role that the odd shaped handle does on the pacer poles. A cheaper alternative would be to pick up used ski poles. Any pole including a smoothed off stick is better for your knees than no poles.
Has anyone brought and used elastic knee braces on their trips.
Are pacer poles different that hiking poles?
Yes, I just finished 50 miles around Hot Springs using one of the newer Futuro knee braces that kind of looks like this but appears to be made out of a newer, more breathable material. Basically, these are good for remind you not to overdo it and provide some nominal lateral stabilization.
