Friends carry it in griz country. I don't, but it's probably a good idea in places like Glacier and Banff.

If it makes you more comfortable carry it.

I intend on carrying it when I go with my son.

Same reason as you, cheap insurance.

You'll have to chase the bears on the AT to spray the stuff at them. : - )

Can you tell me about bear etiquite. Many people when I mention the AT. say I'll turn up a bear food. So when was the last time there was a bear attack in the East and the West. My quess common sense goes a long way. More dangerous crossing the street in town.

I always thought that stuff would anger a bear more than anything else, giving it more incentive to do you in. More likely to need bear spray for use on a trail psycho or hitchhike gone wrong.

    Ever spray Bear Spray?

Try it. Look out for prevailing winds.

Odds are, you'll end up hurting yourself more than a bear.
up over the hills, theres nothing to fear
theres a pub across the way with whisky and beer
its a lengthy journey on the way up to the top
but it ain't so bad if you have a great big bottle o'scotch

I don't know where you would find a list of non-fatal bear attacks, but this seems to be fairly accurate listing of fatal attacks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._North_America

The only hikers I ever met that had "problems" with bears also had dirty camps. Go figure!

Now if I were in grizzly country and could not carry a gun then I would carry some spray and keep away from those with a dirty camp

I thought of a gun also but I read two different articles that said when a gun was used on the bear the person with the gun was attacked and injured more than 50% of the time. When Bear Spray was used it was shown to be 98% effective.

If you google Bear Spray you'll find the articles.

The gun isn't for the bears... It's for the gunman.

I have a magical carabeaner that keeps the bears away. I haven't been eaten yet. Prove me wrong.

I usually carry a small can of pepper spray. Good for dogs, angry unreasonable people, and would give me something to do (spray the bear) while he was eating me. All bears on the AT don't run away. Had one in the smokies walk right up to me. He was about 25 feet away before he decided to go around me. See pics in my gallery. You can see the flash of the camera in his eyes.
If you find yourself in a fair fight; your tactics suck.
