Parking, Neels Gap?

I was planning on doing a dayhike pretty soon and I was wondering if there is parking at Neels Gap. I know there is a parking lot about 1/2 mile or so North of Neels Gap and I know that you aren't supposed to park at Mountain Crossings unless you are shopping, It's been a while since I have been up that way, but I seem to remember there being some limited parking on the side of the highway right past Mountain Crossings. Is this correct?

If you're hiking, you should probably use the Byron Reese parking area which is just .4 from Neel Gap and Mountain crossings.

Someone posted a notice recently on WB that the Byron Reese parking lot would be closed from 7-26 till (?) for maintenance. I'd call the USFS or Mountain Crossings for info if that's where you planned to park.

Didn't know this. But yeah, calling Mountain Crossings ahead of time would be the best bet.

There is no official parking due to the Reese parking nearby, but if the lot is closed, you could pull off the side of the road in some spots. Personally, I wouldn't do it. I'd go to either Tesnatee Gap or Lake Winfield Scott - both are about 6m of hiking from/to Neels. You would basically be getting about the same hike just coming in from a different direction.

I can confirm that as of Thursday July, 29 the parking area is closed, and the pull off spots near Mountain Crossings have No Parking signs....I decided to keep on driving to Tesnatee Gap and just did an out and back from there.

I'm taking a newbie hikier with me who isn't ready for that long of a hike yet. I suppose I will take her to Raven Cliff Falls.
I wonder how much longer the parking lot will be closed.
