My Trail name is "Twisted Walkingstick".
If we look at the path, we do not see the sky. We are earth people on a spiritual journey to the stars. Our quest, our earth walk is to look within, to know who we are, to see that we are connected to all things, that there is no separation, only in the mind.

Long distance hikers are merely inquisitive. Free thinkers.

Judging by this and all the other threads about nothing, I think the winter season is getting everyone on WB a little twisted.

I did a quick 2 miles yesterday to a small summit in a nearby State Forest and it did help clear the cobwebs.

    Default Percentages

When my husband begin his thru-hike he was about 5% twist, 80% normal, 15% somewhere in between. When he finished he was 50% twisted and the other 50% was somewhere between twisted and really f*****d up! And, as a bonus, he started off as a hiker with a drinking problem and ended up as a DRINKER with a HIKING problem! hikerwife

    Default And now..a little poetry

MUCH madness is divinest sense To a discerning eye; Much sense the starkest madness. ’T is the majority In this, as all, prevails. 5 Assent, and you are sane; Demur,—you ’re straightway dangerous, And handled with a chain.

How twisted? Twisted enough to reject the dominant paradigm. Twisted enough to know that the world of work (a modern corporate-inspired version of slavery) is unnatural. Twisted enough to accept oneself as a wild animal among wild animals.

Think about the life of a bobcat. They are so good at hunting that they spend very little time doing it. Instead, they can loll about, sleeping, napping, dozing, looking for mates or playing or whatever. Now human beings.

We're supposed to be intelligent animals. But we spend much of our lives performing repetitive tasks, the most mundane drudgery that most respectable wild animals would never dream of doing. Indeed, I'd bet they'd die first.

Now imagine a bobcat entering into a contract that required him to only be with one female, period. He'd be breaking the contract the first day, because his DNA drives him to seek the females that overlap his territory. That's a driving force in a bobcat's life.

Am I saying that we are bobcats? No. But I am saying that we would be much better off if our laws, customs, social mores conformed more closely with our biology.

A lot of us get that eery feeling when we step onto the AT, that we're home, even though we just left home. I'm sure there's a good reason for that feeling. And that reason is simple. We've come back, to our ancestral home.

Well I ain't a bobcat, I guess more like a wolf because I am happy to have a mate for life. But when you talk about feeling like I am home every time I get on the trail I think you are right on the money.

    Default I guess I qualify

first time I used my HHammock, I woke up to answer nature's call and found myself twisted to the point that I was laying on the mosquito net and the escape hatch was over my head. don't know how I did that without hurting either myself or the hammock, but I'm sure it qualifies me as twisted.
I came into this world with nothing, and I still have most of it left.
