Another good reason for hiking poles.... as I would have used them as daggers.

I'm a dog owner (yellow lab), but rarely take her hiking b/c of a bad knee. She's leashed when I do take her out.

Usually when I'm in the scenario that the OP described, I keep hiking straight toward the dog, as if the yapping startled dog is a pest to be ignored, which usually sends the barking dog back towards it's owner. I've never had a dog continue aggressively toward me. If that happened, I would prepare my stance for quick action,,, constant jabbing motion w/ my poles, and swift kicking. I hope that would do the trick until the idiot owner could control his dog.

OH WOW - Goldenbear you and I have statistics in common... but here is the rub... I HATE THESE DOG POSTS ON WHITE BLAZE ... I hate the thread and the guy who started it... As an Animal Lover, I frequently say GROW A PAIR. Go ahead carry a cheap pepper spray... IN fact I recommend packing and Grizzly spray, good for dogs and Gary Michael Hilton looking folk...

OK sorry got to step down off the soap box. Folks last month I was taking care of a friend, and placed a twenty foot ladder next to a 2nd floor window.... I placed the ladder way over to the left of the shutter I know what I am doing, I am going to open the shutter and release the 5-10 bats from the shutter, can't miss it,the piss was staining the white stone wall. I open the shutter keeping well out of the way and out tumbled 200 plus bats...I was covered in Bats all down my back mostly on the right side. Yea the ladder bounced and hung on one upright.. almost pissed myself. I fixed the exclusion devices and went home. I checked my skin and there wasn't a break in the skin but every time I think about it my shoulder hurts. Now here is the facts.

Rabies... I completely forgot. Rabies are carried by DOG & CAT BITES #1 we are so wrapped by govt regs and state - Right now affluent Chinese are buying pets by the millions.... and not required to get the shots. Rabies in China is up 37 percent in humans. SO I have come full circle while watching what is happening locally at the Delco SPCA...

Cat bites are just as dangerous. So go ahead - if the putz cant control his pet, shoot the pet and cut off the head, then ask questions later. You have to send the head to the State Capitol for testing.(thats the law) ..Suggest a single chop blow with Machete. imagine as you walk away the look on the putz's face......

Heay its the INTERNET.AND THAT"S THE LAW FOLKS TEST REQUIRES the destruction of the animal....

There was an Old Man with a owl,
    Who continued to bother and howl;
He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl.

Oh well, it's not the first time. It's a mighty fine thing, not needing to be right all the time.

Thumbs up No need to keep this quiet

The change from my quote of seven snake bite deaths in the last decade to about ten snake bit deaths each year -- or even EXACTLY twelve such deaths annually -- changes nothing about my thesis. The original statement that snake bites are "thousands" of times more dangerous than dog bites remains complete and total nonsense.

If you like, I can change my original post to reflect the facts that I carelessly failed to catch the first time. That is the essence of an intelligent approach, where you alter your statements when you find better facts. It sure beats the alternative approach. Believe me, I'll acknowledge, that snakes cause more deaths than I originally stated, a LOT faster than Michelle Bachmann will acknowledge that she was completely wrong to even suggest that any vaccine causes mental retardation in teenagers.

This mean a lot more to you than it does to me I think. The truth is, I was only joking - referencing a comment I frequently make about bear attacks.

If I felt better I'd go into more detail, but anyway - I really don't care, ok?

I just want to add that the meds I'm on for treating my hepatitis C are really doing a number on my brain, the way I think, and how I feel. Sometimes I don't know what's come over me and I literally feel crazy quite often.

So, anyway, I regret mentioning the snakebite thing - I was truly only joking but I understand that it might not have looked that way. I certainly wasn't trying to start a data war with anyone.

I just need to read and not post I suppose.

So you have to go on meds to be like the rest of us. BTW I hope you get to feeling better soon and for sure don't stop posting. Your post are great reading.

If you used smiley faces, then you were joking. Otherwise, you are like the school yard bully who beats up on a smaller kid, then tells the teacher, "I was only joking." Those lame excuses simply don't cut the mustard. It's not what one says later, it's what one does to start with. Indeed, if what one does is good and correct, it needs no explanation or excuses later.

    Still, regrets accepted.

    Smile No need to apologize

    I goofed.
This fact was pointed out to me.
I accepted that I made an error and made an effort to correct it. I actually APPRECIATE when errors on my part are pointed out, because it assists in the intelligent discussion of an issue.
And intelligent discussion involves correcting errors like mine, and an admission by the person who made the error.

After this entire discussion my rule is unchanged. If your dog bites me or mine it will have a bullet through its head. period no debate.
The people(owners) who don't teach their dogs that this is unacceptable behaivor are responsible and will be reported to the nearest police. Then the owner can reimburse medical expenses or face a civil suit for the same. Owning a pet is a responsibility that most take seriously but there are always the bad apples and I'm happy to make an example of them.

Just remember Doc that sometimes dogs shoot back!

A Memphis, Tenn., man is in critical condition Wednesday after his dog shot him in the back.
Police say King George, a 150-pound Great Dane, accidentally knocked a .22-caliber pistol off his owner's end table around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday. The gun went off, hitting his 21-year-old owner in the back, MyFOXMemphis.com reports.

"I knew he was smart, I didn't think he was that smart," the victim's fiancee, Miesha Lucas told MyFOXMemphis.com. "He was always protective. I didn't think he would be like that."

If you removed the dog's teeth, one bo one, like in the movie,"The Dentist", there would be no further problem....

Dogs on the trail and Boy Scout groups are two of many heated issues on the trail. The difference between the good/bad dogs and scouts depends on the responsible (or not) owners and responsible (or not) leaders. Unfortunately, every year the irresponsible ones make it more and more difficult for the responsible ones (& others) to enjoy their hikes.

I've never been bit but many times I've thought that I was about to be. I bet that every hiker on here has had that heart stopping experience more than once. I know that there are good dogs and good owners, but aggressive dogs on the trail are a constant problem. I wish that a law would be passed banning all dogs in public places and that violators would face life in prison and a million dollar fine. I should be able to enjoy the outdoors without having to deal with your dog!
