2009 was not that tough. Compared to, say, 2003, when we didn't see the sun for a month, 2003 was a walk in the park.
If yer responding to my post, I was playing off the previous poster who alluded to those who believe that the end of the world will be in 2012 due to predictions allegedly contained in the Mayan calendar. According to these "prophesies," December 21, 2012 will be the ultimate destruction of the world.
Now I'm not sayin they're right, but I do plan to finish my thru hike before that date!

Now I'm not sayin they're right, but I do plan to finish my thru hike before that date!, I know about the Mayan thing, I've actually read some David Icke in my free time, I think his whole reptilian humanoid theory is quite interesting. I'm pretty excited to see what happens, even if it's nothing at all.
If the world does end I can't think of a better thing than spending my last days living nomadically in the mountains. I'll be doing the same thing just on the PCT.
I probably should been clearer as to what I was questioning. My "why" was more directed at the still pending question of the mysterious symbol next to the class of 2009. I'm really curious as to what the reasons are for it being there.

dude in 09 it raind the whole month of may most of my time in VA was nothn but rain and wet sleeping gear...

I'm pretty sure it was to mark the current year of thru-hiker class. I just don't think it's been updated in a while.
