    Default Hubba Tent

I bought a Hubba for a section hike this spring.

I really like it a lot - however There is a "cross pole" that supports the tent and fly.

It seems like I have to really stretch the tent/fly to put the poles in or take the poles out of the grommets.

Is there a "secret" to the procedure - or am I doing something wrong?

I'm concerned about stretching the material that much and tearing it or causing the seams to separate.

    I would appreciate any help.

Yes there is some tension, but I had no trouble at all on my SOBO for over three months of hiking. It can get nerve wracking I know.
Make sure you have the cross pole at the correct angle. You will see it is naturally curved somewhat. Twist at the joints it to make sure it curves correctly to form a slight bow before inserting it.
Sometimes I have not put the tent fly part into the cross pole unless I know its gonna rain. Also, loosen the corners of the fly might allow it a little more give. Once its in, then retighten.

Walrus Tents (the previous incarnation of that series of MSR tents) were all quite tight pitching. You really have to stretch things. But a good tight pitch is critical to good ventilation and proper shedding of wind and weather. It's not as bad as it seems.

No "secret". The tent is made to handle the "stretch",, it's what makes the tent taut. You'll be fine.
