    Default best beanie/skullcap for sleeping

I'm one of those people who almost ALWAYS have to have their head outside of the mummy-bag hood when I sleep. It's not the bag, I just never get all that comfortable with my head restricted. Due to this I have been experimenting with different caps on my last few trips to keep my head warm in 35-45 degree evenings.

I've tried the generic knit wool cap --- so bulky, not a fan. Last trip I used a smartwool cap (merino wool with fleece headband inside), and I woke up with my head so hot I thought I was on fire. So I am definitely looking for something a bit lighter/less warm then this.

Any cheap recommendations? I usually don't start my camp season until the end of March so weather is rarely below 35f.

Have you looked at the ZPacks Micro-Fleece Hats? I haven't personally tried one, but I will probably add one to my next order from Joe. $13 and 0.8 oz sounds pretty good to me.

I like a Balaclava. It's not likely to fall off during the night, and it helps to keep my bag and stuff sack pillow clean. I have several, and my Smartwool clava is very thin & light.
I also like wearing them in cold weather on a hike. I can pull it up or down to regulate temp., they provide full coverage of the ears and neck, and I sometimes just tuck it half-way inside itself to form a beanie.
    Love 'em!

Best? That's always a tough request.
Best for when it's 50 deg?
Best for when it's 30 deg?
Best for when it's 10 deg?
    Or all points in between?

There is no right one or wrong one, but, here's an idea. Take one or your older polypro (or equiv.) shirts and cut the sleeves off to make it into a short sleeve shirt.
Use one of the sleeves as your new headpiece.

If you have a few different thicknesses of said shirts, try them all.
You may find your perfect one although what is perfect in March may not be perfect in June of course.

I bought one with my last order, Without ZPacks logo tag, Weighs 0.9 oz.(24 grams) exactly.
Very lightweight, Made well, Fits snug, Almost covers my ears completely.
I'm wearing it now but have not slept in it yet, I have a Mountain Hardwear Power Stretch Hardface Balaclava for cold and sleeping. Could use the ZPacks also.

Ditto the Balaclava. In addition to covering your head, it provides cover over the neck area where you also lose a fair amount of heat due to the blood vessels close to the surface. I have a fleece version, but also a lightweight one that I like for sleeping in very cold weather, which I can pull over my mouth/nose and not have to worry about breathing into my sleeping bag.

Ray Way bomber hat. Best warmth to weight for the head except for down balaclavas.

Based on being to hot in that I would go the Buff route. Plus it allows you to wear it many different ways for sun protection while hiking. Just my .02

Take a look at Old Navy. They might have some fleece beanies left from winter stock and it'd probably be on sale. They're good for polyester shirts too, the RecTech that are regularly $10 but often half off (the price, not the shirt). My lightweight zip-neck fleece is from there but I haven't seen this item in store for a while. They have similar weight fleece gloves also, matching the hats.
