Default Obama Adds 60 MIles to Appalachian Trail

Washington DC (April 1, 2011) President Obama announced today that he is adding 60 miles to the Appalachian Trail. Executive Order 23495 directs the National Park Service to add the 60 miles of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal between Harpers Ferry and Washington DC to the 2,178 mile Appalachian Trail.

Haha yeah, right. I bet he doesn't even know what the AT is.

That doesn't sound right. First of all, the C&O Canal Towpath is 184.5 miles long between Harpers Ferry and DC and second, that would detour the trail 184.5 miles straight east and then you would have to get back so another 184.5 miles. The Towpath is already part of the National Park System. I couldn't find any other info on this 'extenstion' of the Appalachian Trail...not to say it isn't true of course. The government has done stranger things in the past.

Those of us in Alabama, a red state, are going to be mad, since many here have been hoping for a Pinhoti Trail connection to the AT for some time. (Hold the flames, just Kidding!)

Ah yes. It is April 1st isn't it. It always sneaks up on me. Perhaps I should change my trail name to Gullible's Travels.

The government doesn't need a special day to spend taxpayer's money or to try to make a fool of us.

I accept the nomination but I'm gonna have to be able to disappear every once in a while without telling my staff so that I can hike the AT.
