    Smile Fun Town to stop in NY to meet friends

    What is a great town in NY or even NJ to meet up with someone on the trail?...not to hike, but to visit/explore?

    There's two states not really noted for great trail towns. None I found really interesting to explore. That said, Greenwood Lake, NY would probably be your best bet.

    Seriously, if you're looking for a place to explore, NYC is the place. You will never lack for anything to do in NYC.
    Don't take anything I say seriously... I certainly don't.

    You can also take the train in from the Harriman station right before Harriman State Park, if that timing works better.

    From Pawling take Metro North to nyc and previously posted. Then switch trains in Penn Station for Newark Airport, fly to Las Vegas!
    If we are facing in the right direction, all we have to do is keep on walking.

    Not a whole lot of town life in the North Jersey Skylands -- yes, that is what the area is rather wishfully called -- but Mountain Creek is definitely worth a trip if you have friends that can bring you a bathing suit and you don't mind taking a near-o. For added fun right now, go to WeirdNJ and read about its predecessor, Action Park, and thank your lucky stars for modern safety regulations.

    Another place that's often overlooked is Space Farms. It started out as just a family place that collected stray animals and weird local memorabilia in the pre-Great Depression days; nowadays it's grown into an extremely large collection of antiques (cars, farm equipment, toys, firearms, you name it) as well as a modest but interesting zoo. You can either get picked up at Culvers Gap, or take a short side trail at N 41 13.550 W 074 42.610 and walk a mile down the road.

    We are not now that strength which in old days
    Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
    One equal temper of heroic hearts.
