Don't remember which forum I saw it on; it may have been Bushcraftusa.com or backpacking.net. One of the members made a small hammock for his dog, he hung the doggie hammock under his own hammock. This accomplishes a few things.
1: keeps the dog off the cold ground
2: keeps the dog close to you
3: offers the dog a bit of shelter from any bad weather that might roll in.

Sounds like an interesting sight Kayak Karl, wouldn't happen to have a picture of the pup in the hammock eh? I gave up on the prospects of getting my dog in the hammock after one try.

I was mostly a shelter bum on my thru, but switched between a hammock and just a tarp based on temperatures. Sleeping under the hammock works pretty well. Just be prepared to go to the ground with them if it will be too cold. My dog has short dobie fur, so I found myself doing this enough to warrant just mailing the hammock home after a while.

My dog sleeps almost always winds up sleeping in the tent with me. She stays "on guard" all night. She'll stay outside the tent if I don't let her in but she is constantly alerting to noises. About the only way she'll get any sleep is if I let her in the tent with me and even then she doesn't get much sleep. I wouldn't even think about taking her if I didn't have some type of shelter for her.

I hang my hammock just above the ground. the dog lays on a sleeping pad next to me.
If you find yourself in a fair fight; your tactics suck.

As I have not over night hiked can't say;but on the camping trip we did first of the month the dogs slept in the tent. One is a terrior mix which spent first night in her crate the second at the foot of my wife's "bed" and the other is a lab mix that slept both nights between us on the tent floor. When I hike I will take the tent my son and his friend slept in and the lab and I should be fine.
