    Default Remote Containment Systems

Anyone know where I can get those handheld wireless fence devices for a safety precaution?

If you're talking about a remote shock collar for your dog, get it through a reputable trainer who can teach you how to properly use it. I have one and use it but they should only be used as part of a thorough training program that teaches both the dog and the handler consistent reinforcement. Also, while my dogs are off leash on a lot of other trails, for the A.T. specifically I would highly recommend using a leash, there just are too many hikers, other dogs and road crossings on the trail to trust your dogs safety to an electric collar.
It's called "Lyme" disease, not "Lymes" disease! (Hint: There's only one Lyme)

Well the primary purpose of it would be for safety precaution, and it inst primarily for trail purposes mostly for romping in the yard, hes a young sheltie and I just don't wanna let him without the leash without a safety. I posted the question here because I saw a few people who posted on here who used them. The Wireless Yard systems are excellent just expensive. I figured for half price or less I could at least have more control than nothing. It isnt a behavioral reason just because we have roads that surround my whole home but plenty of yard for him to play in.

I have and use remote collars. You should understand they are NO silver bullet! They are very useful, but can be the fastest way to confuse and abuse your dog if used incorrectly. They don't replace good training. Your dog must fully and clearly understand what is expected of him first before you apply any correction. A shock is a correction, just like a "leash pop". And your dog must understand the meaning of any correction FULLY!
I think your dog should learn a solid recall before you apply shock. And the shock should be layered over an already well conditioned correction.
I like to usually advise a substitute behavior. Teach a reliable recall and running off is not a concern. I posted a previous thread here about a "solid recall".
It's hard to find a good trainer, and 100 times harder to find a good "e-collar" trainer. I like to recommend obedience training clubs. They are not usually motivated so much by money.
Do be careful to get qualified help before using these devices, there's just so much that can go wrong.
