I plan on hiking the Md Section SOBO in April.
Heading north from Sam's Gap around April 21st or 28th to Waynesboro Va. Broke a bone in my foot last year so only lasted 2 days.
Just did my first overnight of the year in MA over the weekend, finally feels like winter. I'm going to try to get out to the trail for a couple weeks later this year, but no plans yet.
It's called "Lyme" disease, not "Lymes" disease! (Hint: There's only one Lyme)
"This sucks and I love it"
Hiking Spivey Gap to US 19E-61.1 miles.
Made arrangements for my shuttle yesterday. Hiking from Culver's Gap in NJ to Great Barrington, MA starting May 4th. 199.6 miles. Hope the weather is nice.
I've scaled back my planned thru-hike to try and complete Springer to Damascus in about 5 weeks. Husband was planned companion for thru but he bailed on me because of a job offer. I'm lucky he is understanding enough to be OK with me hiking while he house-hunts in the new job location. A good female friend who hikes and has worked with me for years in manual labor volunteer positions is between job contracts so she's decided to join me. We'll get on the trail on April 18th.
Add a night at Mountain Harbour if you can, then get their breakfast - well worth the $9 extra - FANTASTIC meal.
When are you heading out for this? I hiked it last summer and it was one of my favorite areas. The Azaleas and Rhododendron were in full bloom on Roan and Jane Bald (lots of people too). Little Hump and Hump were amazing, we hiked over them on partly cloudy day. Sometimes we were above the clouds, sometimes in the clouds, sometimes in bright sun. Absolutely beautiful several miles, thoroughly enjoyed that hike.
Hope it's as great for you.
I'm going from Iron Gap to Damascus in May (hopefully before trail days).
Maybe I'll see you out there.
Started at Springer 3 years ago and just doing sections as I can.
Sure wish responsibilities would permit a "thru hike" - but I don't
think it's in my future.
Anyway - Damascus is a good target - - almost 500 miles into the trail and already
covered GA, NC and TN.
Just got back from a quick section: bland to pearisburg. Hope to get in as much hiking as I can this year.
Have been trying to figure out where to start 2 month section hike in Late July. So far have sone 40 mile section from Fontana Dam to newfound gap- 40 miles. So this is a big deal for me. Now planning to start in Vermont at Dartmouth and go south for 2 months.
Just decided this spring to start section hiking. Starting in CT end of April headed out for 4 days. We will see how far north I can get, all depends on how much time I can get off of work but right now I have at least 2 more 4 day weekends (May and September) and a 5 day vacation in July. Shorter weekend hikes are doable as I live in MA and the trail is never that far of a drive.
I did that last year starting about the same time. Great trip. Getting into or out of Damascus is a pain. You might try getting a shuttle from Mt. Rodgers to Johnson City. That is a regional airport including Delta. I did a shuttle to Bristol and then a bus to Knoxville. That was long and a real pain.
Enjoy the hike.
I will be starting again at Damascus.
I just completed one section, around Hot Springs, that strings together everything from Springer to Killington, VT. I hope to go out in July and August and finish up, situations at home permitting.
2 weeks, I'm off for 35 miles in VA.
