Can Nite Ize Figure 9 Carbines support a hammock?

I use the small Nite Ize Figure 9s to tie down my hammock's tarp and I love them. Has anyone used the large, aluminum Nite Ize Figure 9 Carabiner to support an actual hammock?

I should say that the company states each carabiner can support 150 lbs. I've done a quick calculation and determined the maximum hammock weight (person & gear) given the angle of the support rope from the horizontal:

52 lbs load at an angle if 10°.
103 lbs at 20°
159 lbs at 30°
212 lbs at 45°

[Max_Weight = 300 * sin (angle)]

Still, I'd like to know if anyone uses these when hanging.

i wouldn't do it, its not rated for it. you will be pulling +300# per side if you are 200#. some still use them. some have broke. there are so many lighter and cheaper options out there. how did you plan to hook them to the tree straps???

Yeah, I wouldn't use these myself, I was just curiousif anyone did. I tie mine up with a knot following the Hennessy Hammock method. What other product would you recommend? I weigh 190 lbs and have a HH Hyperlite. thanks for the input.

Suspensions
i used the ring buckles w/12' straps on the trail (works great if you need to hang in shelter)
my other hammocks have whoopie slings on them using dutchware.

i am using them, with a hennessy hammock. the only problem that i have, is that i will set my hammock up at a certain height, and after i get into it, it drops down to half the height.

just to clarify after i get into it and get out of the hammock for the first time, the hammock is at a lower position. is this normal or is the line slipping in the figure 9.

but i guess to answer ur question, i like them, easy to put up and take down. and i use the beaners when im hiking to hang stuff off the pack.

If you are using the figure 9 to suspend the hammock you may want to stop. I would recommend looking into Whoopie Slings if you want something simple to set up and adjust.

I use lightweight wire gate climbing carabiners and straps and use what I call a "slippery Windsor" knot. Someday I'll have to take a picture of it. I stumbled upon the knot while experimenting with quickly tied, fast holding, easily removeable knots. Couldn't be simpler.
