Oh no, I see a trend developing.
We'll know its in full swing when REI starts selling the "Osprey Hiking Vest". and ULA comes out with an UL version.

There was an Old Man with a owl,
Who continued to bother and howl;
He sat on a rail, And imbibed bitter ale,
Which refreshed that Old Man and his owl. . WOO <Audio
I met a guy in Virginia that was cruising along at 25+ miles per day...he had no pack. He was wearing shorts and a tshirt and had tied together some paracord into a web that he wore like shoulder straps and had his stuff tied to it...and he didn't have much...a piece of tyvek duct taped together into a sleeping bag and a few other very small items. He carried protein bars in his pockets, but said that he mostly just ate when he was in town and didn't carry much food with him...at 25 miles a day I can see how you wouldn't have to carry much food in the south...you're hitting a town almost every day at that pace.
I'm wondering if this is the humor forum!
Do you need a pack? If you don't have a pack, how do you carry shelter, sleeping bag, and several days of food? Geeez.
You could attach off-road tires to a grocery cart and push your stuff over the AT?
By the way.. I know how Warren does it. He uses support vans and his "circle" hikes from one road crossing to the next. A whole lot of day hikes strung together. That's not backpacking.
Moderators, please move to Ultra-Light Hikers Forurm.
How about looking into 18th century alternatives to a backpack. Snapsacks, haversacks and blanket rolls (tumplines) are all "one strap" alternatives to a backpack. You can't carry as much, and that's a good thing!Perhaps some of these items could be made with modern materials. A snapsack made out of ripstop nylon fabric with a padded shoulder pad could work pretty well.

How about just having a large picnic basket with everything in it UL of course, and include your waterproof red rain poncho SL nylon or Cuben fiber, with attached red pointy cap.
Tell everyone that at Katahdin is grandmas house.
Hahaha very funny, creative threadloving the ideas!
But, now it's actually got me wondering if there's a relatively comfortable way to just roll everything up in your tent/hammock/tarp and strap it to your back... this may deserve a weekend of experimenting...
Good Lord, instead of looking like hikers, you guys are going to look like bag ladies...
well isn't that better than wearing skirts?
No offense to Kilts...

I don't think Grandma Gatewood hauled a pack along . She did it twice .
No pack ; nothing gets soaked .
Katz and Bryson used newspaper delivery bags at one point in their adventures. Could be done I suppose if you have frequent resupply. Problem being you could only carry a couple days of food at a time. My issue would be that with a sling bag of some srot over one shoulder your load would tend to shift more creating a balance issue which (i personally think) would be unacceptable. Why not just take your minimal supplies in a day pack and be done with it?
