Can anyone recommend a good book (or documentary, etc) about the history of the trail?

This is a pretty good start. There is also a link at the bottom to "Trail Years" the official (I suppose) history of the AT Conference (now Conservancy).
'Forest and Crag' by Waterman has a section on the AT as well. It's a great book if you are into the history and culture of recreation in the Appalachians in New England--maybe not so interesting for folks from the southern parts.

Try the Appalachina Trail Museum at www.atmuseum.org. In Pine Grove Furnace State Park (AP) the half way point.
The GMC put out a nice book on Long Trail History.
Would love to see a professiona historial writer read thru all the oldest shelter and trail logs and put together a book.
Thanks for the good starting points. I actually dug out a book that my parents have, published in 1972 or 3 by the national geographic society, written by a thru-hiker with lots of nice pictures. I remember reading it probably about 10 years ago when it looked like something fun that I would never "get" to do.
