Approach Trail

If one does not want to use the approach trail at the southern terminus, is it still possible to start the AT on Springer? Is there another way, perhaps easier that is not via the approach trail?

This thread talks about the closest road access - FS Road 42 - on the other side of Springer.

Easy- The quickest way to the top of Springer that requires no hiking is to do what Robert "Jumpstart" Hensley did, parachute! Just make sure you're wearing the correct pack when you jump out of the plane!

I got dropped off at the parking lot off FS Road 42. You'll hike south to the Southern Terminus atop Springer Mountain then turn around and go North on the AT to begin your hike.

Take the approach trail. It's only 8.8, I believe, and as long as you're in the neighborhood might as well do it unless you're pressed for time.

I will be doing the GA section this June and I plan to do the approach trail. Last time I was there was in 1982. Want to see how much things have changed (besides the fact I'm 30 years older).

If the timing works out plan to camp at long creek falls. It's at about 5+ mile from Springer. Just beautiful.

The approach trail is not that bad if you just start at the hotel and skip the falls.

If you're not pressed for time and want to break up the trail from AFSP to Springer Mt., you could hike from AFSP to the Lenn Foot Hike Inn, get a great dinner, stay the night and get started off with a good breakfast. From the top of the falls it's 4.4 miles to the Hike Inn and then 5 miles to Springer I believe.

James - The approach trail should not be missed from everything I've heard and read. It's kind of like a perfect start to your journey.

It's only a 4 hr or so walk at a moderate pace. Unless you are coming straight from the couch, it is not really that difficult. Logistically it is also easier for the person dropping you off, too.
