So sad...
RIP and peace to his family...
Sorry to say it was Parkside. I met hikers on Saturday morning near Caratunk who were with him the day before. Lots of really devastated NOBO's out there. His friends wrote a note to his family which they put in his pack -- which was picked up by a Ranger to turn over to his family. Sad indeed.

My heart breaks for his family.
WOW! I only met him briefly, but he was such a nice guy. So very sorry to hear this. Again condolences to his family and friends. A real loss for all.
there was a note in the blog about meeting former thru-hikers that were cool that he hung out with from Penn State...one had a patch.
My condolences to his family and friends.

Very sorry to hear about the drowning. Our prayers go out to this hiker's family. We were at Pierce Pond last September...a beautiful place.
Always sad to hear of the loss within the AT-Family! Can we say, that at least he died doing what he LOVED, hiking the AT. Feel so sorry for his friends & family !!
Cherokee Bill ..... previously known as "billyboy"
Can't even read this blog, it's too heartbreaking, he was so close. I wonder what really happened.

RIP Parkside. So very sad. Hitting the AT next month now has even more meaning for me. I'll hike some miles in your memory kiddo.![]()
Go to Achilles' trail journal and view guest book. From what i am reading there Achilles was there and went under serveral times to save his friend.
His poor mother! You can absolutely feel the love and devotion for her son in her blog. And can you imagine how close she must have been to him to have devoted her blog to following his journey??
He was less than 250 miles from finishing. Maybe they could make him an "honorary 2000 miler" since it was obviously so important to him?

Thank you to all who posted condolences to our family. My son, Paul A.K.A Parkside, was living his dream. He was so excited about coming to the end of the trail. He was an awesome kid who touched many with his charm, intellect, passion, and humor. I know he enjoyed meeting all the kind-hearted people on the trail and in the towns, as much as, he relished being surrounded by the natural beauty. Love and happy trails to you all! Mary Bernhardt
Paul was a member of our web site (FilthyMAcNasty) who I believe went by the trail name of Parkside.
I never got to meet Paul but I know he was an awesome kid, not just any person takes on the Appalachian Trail and completes it and we know he would have. Thank you Mary and my condolences go out to you and your family. If there is anything we can do here please let us or me know.
